+2 FRETS • +2 STRINGS

This relationship works from the 6th and 5th strings.

It puts the octave close to the original note — which is why this relationship becomes so useful when you start understanding chord shapes, roots and fretboard organisation.

A huge shout-out to 15-year-old Alien Guitar Secrets student Ben, who took the stage at his school assembly at St Paul’s, Manly, to perform Ozzy Osbourne’s legendary “Bark at the Moon” — featuring the iconic guitar work of Jake E. Lee.

Jake E. Lee’s playing on this song is a masterclass in powerful riffs, expressive phrasing, precision, speed and attitude. It’s no easy guitar piece, especially when you’re stepping up to perform it live in front of your entire school.

Ben is an exceptionally talented young guitarist, but talent is only part of the story. Behind performances like this are countless hours of practice, persistence and a willingness to keep pushing beyond what was possible yesterday.

🎸👽 **JUNIOR ACADEMY SHOUT OUT!**

A massive congratulations to **Chris** on completing **Grade 1 — Listener | Phase 2: Groove & Control** at the **Alien Guitar Secrets Junior Academy**.

And a huge shout out to his teacher **Tom**, who’s been guiding Chris through the program and doing a fantastic job developing the fundamentals that really matter.

Phase 2 is about much more than simply learning riffs. Chris has been working on **timing, groove, picking control, muting, articulation, repetition and playing with consistency** — building the skills that turn “knowing where the notes are” into actually **playing music**.

Chris now moves forward to the next stage of Grade 1, where we start exploring iconic guitar riffs, musical vocabulary and *why the riffs we all know and love actually work.*

Ever notice that your familiar fretboard patterns seem to shift around the G and B strings?

There’s a reason.

The B string changes the geometry of the fretboard because of the way standard guitar tuning is organised.

So when finding the octave from the 3rd string to the 2nd string, the formula changes:

+8 FRETS • +1 STRING

Not seven.

Eight.

Understanding that one exception removes a huge amount of fretboard confusion.

Now how do you locate its octave on another string without guessing?

AGS Octave Formula 2:

+7 FRETS • +1 STRING

This relationship applies from the 6th, 5th, 4th and 2nd strings.

Start with the note you know. Follow the formula. Find the octave.

Now the fretboard starts connecting across the neck, not just along it.

Here’s your first octave shortcut:

SAME STRING + 12 FRETS = SAME NOTE NAME, NEXT OCTAVE

Find an E.

Move exactly 12 frets higher on the same string.

You’ve found another E — one octave higher.

This works with every note on every string.

Suddenly, one known note becomes two.

If you keep guessing note names on the fretboard, go back to the foundation.

Music uses just seven letter names:

A B C D E F G

Then the alphabet starts again.

The important exception to remember is that B–C and E–F are naturally one semitone apart.

Once the musical alphabet becomes automatic, finding notes on the guitar becomes dramatically easier.
