We’re proud to be part of KTF’s Eye See PNG program, expanding access to eye care in some of the most remote communities in Papua New Guinea.

Imagine sitting in a classroom, your eyes straining as you look at the chalkboard. No matter how hard you look and the growing headache behind your eyes, all you can make out is a blur of shapes vaguely resembling letters and numbers.

Anyone would struggle to learn or stay in school.

Glasses allow people to see a whole new world. Especially, students who can now see the chalkboard, read books and do their homework with ease.

Recently, Eye See PNG in partnership with OOXii, offered all day community-wide vision testing and prescriptive glasses at Pari Community Hall. By the end of day two, 440 people walked away with corrective glasses - leaving confident, empowered, and with clear vision!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by despite the rain, tested their reading strength, or tried on a pair of OOXii glasses.

This was our first time showing OOXii reading glasses and sunglasses to the public — it was great to share our mission with the Bowral community.

We’re now exploring other market locations, so comment where you’re based 📍

Eye See PNG - not just glasses, opportunity!

KTF health workers Maggie, Jesica and Thomas were out on the road recently, with a week-long Eye See PNG patrol to primary schools in Kokoda, Kebara, Gorari, Ilamo and Ajeka. They tested the sight of more than 270 students using an amazing tool developed by our partners 4eyesvision , looking for 20-20 vision! Seeing what was going on, even our local hire company wanted to get in on the action with 62 of their extended community tested 🎉

95 pairs of corrective glasses were distributed, free of charge, to those with impaired vision - life changing!

Akisa jumped at the chance to be tested. She's had poor vision since childhood, which made studying such a challenge she dropped out of school. Recently, Akisa attempted a return to school by enrolling in FODE studies, but her worsening eyesight forced her to withdraw after just two months. Thanks to KTF's Eye See PNG team, Akisa received a proper eye test and corrective glasses, sparking a renewed interest in pursuing her studies.

Often a blindspot when implementing health services, despite estimates stating that 75% of blindness and visual impairment in PNG is treatable or preventable, eye testing is an essential community health service that transforms lives, livelihoods and futures.

Direct productivity gains delivered by addressing vision loss are believed to be the highest of any healthcare intervention. Low treatment costs, limited infrastructure and the high impact on a person’s contribution make investing in eye care a highly compelling proposition - Audrey Aumua

Earlier this year, The Lancet Global Health Commission on Global Eye Health reported that for every 100 men experiencing blindness worldwide, there are 108 women affected.
Inequalities in access to healthcare exacerbate the gender divide. As in many other cultures, women form the backbone of Pacific communities. They are the managers of households and guardians of children. If a woman is unable to function fully the whole community suffers. If we are to see sustainable impacts from development activity in the Pacific, we must do better at getting eye care services to women.

Sarah (an Ophthalmologist in Sydney, Australia) invented the 4eyesVision kit. She runs clinics in remote communities in order to make eye screening and glasses accessible to the 1 billion people with impaired vision. The team train local community members to continue this work.
