Outgrown baby clothes, just drop them at the op shop - right?
Well, it’s not that simple. Op shops are inundated with clothing and some estimates suggest 90% of donations don’t make it to shelves. Generic brands like Target, Kmart, Big W etc. are particularly problematic as these items have little to no resale value. Donations often end up in landfill, despite our good intentions, or sold on to developing parts of the world like the Philippines, or Africa, by the kg, which disrupts their textile industries - and makes the disposal of unwearable clothing their problem.
We definitely don’t want to shame anyone for shopping at generic stores, it’s cheap and convenient, we’ve done it ourselves (hello snow in February which we were completely unprepared for on a recent trip to Tassie - and had to stop at a 24 hour Kmart for sweaters!) but we have to be more mindful of what we are purchasing and what happens to it after we’re done with it.
Here’s a little guide to save for next time you’re having a declutter:
Premium clothing = perfect for resale. Earn store credit at awesome companies like and or set up a seller profile at .pepi
Generic clothing in good condition = consider donating directly to families in need via charities such as or - please note clothing must be in excellent condition, if you wouldn’t buy it yourself, don’t donate it, families in crisis still deserve dignity and these clothes should feel like a gift.
Stained/damaged clothing = recycle via to ensure it does not end up in landfill.
Or, if you’re a Conscious Koala customer, just send your old baby clothes to us and we’ll sort everything for you via our recycling scheme 💁🏼♀️♻️
