I knew my husband and I read to our kids differently.

It turns out *most* dads read to their kids in a specific way. Skipping pages, doing a range of voices, and asking goofy questions are all part of it. And research says it’s good for them.

She spotted a tiny hole in the bark of a Norfolk Pine and called me over to look closer. Out flew a cloud of native stingless bees. Before I could explain who they were, she said “They’re from my book!”

Straight home to check. She was right. A bee she’d met on the page was now in her hand and living down the street.

When the outdoors and stories talk to each other, it stops being “a bee in a book” and becomes part of her world.

Just a stick, a puddle, and dad’s shoulders to carry you. This is the good stuff. 🌳

Watching her walk along the sand searching for tiny pieces of plastic among the seaweed gives me so much hope.

We don’t need to give kids heavy lectures about the planet. Turning our beach walk into a 5-minute “trash treasure hunt” takes almost no effort and opens the door for curiosity and questions.

By the end of our walk, she wasn’t just collecting trash… she felt proud, capable, and connected to something so much bigger than herself. It’s amazing how a simple cardboard tray can turn a toddler into a little steward of the coast.

Growing up, the lesson about nature was to admire it, respect it, to marvel at it. We were taught to be visitors but never that we belonged.

I want it to be different for the next generation. I want them to look at nature as home.

And I want to build it alongside parents who feel the same way… who want their kids to grow up feeling part of the natural world, not separate from it.
