Where do I even begin with this one?!
When reached out to me a couple of years ago about a
potential collaboration, we had absolutely no idea what a collaboration might look
like. What we did know was that the studio has a hell of a lot of talented artists, many
of whom are equally as obsessed with music as I am!
But how would we bring our shared love of art and music together through knitwear?
We brainstormed a very extensive list of musicians who we thought might be keen to
get involved with a project (and maybe we will work our way down the list in the
future). My gut was telling me that Naarm’s resident cowboy hedonist
would be the perfect fit, and boy did my gut deliver on this one!!! Cong’s visual
identity is as striking as his music is thrilling. Luckily for us, Cong was keen to spend
time in the APA sudio, getting to know the artists and exploring the process to see
where it would take us.
We started with a live sketching session with a room full of artists working out of
APA. This has got to be one of the most special moments of my life! It was a
beautiful opportunity to share thoughts around art, music, culture and accessibility in the visual arts world.
Each artist had their own unique interpretation of our charismatic sitter.
One particular artist, Adrian Lazzaro caught my eye! Known for his energetic linework, bold colours and punk sensibility, Adrian perfectly captured Cong’s essence, and even blessed Cong with a new title ‘The Saxophone Killer’. I then had the honour of turning Adrian’s artwork’s and Cong’s iconography into a knitted fever dream!
APA is an arts studio that prides itself on fostering connection, community and
collaboration. This project was the very essence of these values, and I’m so
honoured to have been a part of it!
Special thanks to for capturing this riot of a photoshoot! 📸
