Little dog found
Let me tell you a story... Last night we decided to go for a post dinner walk to unwind before the evening routine - or so we thought. ~
At the park. Not five minutes from home. Alice happily splashing in puddles, Dimity spotting turtles as they stick their necks out of the water. Starts to drizzle, time to head home. "Where's Lola?" (that's my husband) "She was here two minutes ago" (that's me) ~
LOLA, LOLA, LOOOLAAA! ~
"You look after the girls while I search" Dav runs calling out Lola's name. The girls and I call too, sticking together like mud. Rain is heavier now, it is getting darker I take the girls home leaving Dav to search. ~
Distract myself with the bath and bed routine. Calling vets in a 10km radius between towelling the girls and putting on their pjs. Alice exhausted, goes to sleep without a fuss. "Dimity, would you like to see Susie" I ask? Susie a friend and local dog owner arrives in a flash. Dimity is excited by the adventure and promise of staying up late. I depart joining Dav for the remaining minutes of daylight. ~
Dav in car, I'm on foot. With my wellies I traipse through scrub and wade through ponds, calling Lola's name all the while. Neighbours returning home see my distress. "We'll join the search". A string of prayers uttered under my breath. The light is gone I return to relieve Susie. Words of reassurance. ~
Dimity is asleep trusting that Lola will be back in the morning. I get on the virtual telegraph: Facebook groups, lost dog networks. Dav prints out posters and sticks them up. I cook and eat dinner, trying not to gag. Pray, pray some more. ~
10.30 now. Need sleep if we are to resume search in morning. Go for one last look, calling out reassurances in case Lola is stuck in the scrub.
~
Phone lights up. Bridie from bulldogs in Sydney fb group has worked her magic. Inner west mums fb post with a sodden Lola pictured. Dav has got a call. Run home. Relieved.
~
Sound of the side gate. Panting Lola, with an expression that says "Whot?"
~
Lessons learned: love your neighbours, physical and virtual. Dog found minutes from home, clearly she is not as savvy as we thought. Gratitude. Overwhelming gratitude.
