Happy New Year 2026 - 3 Arts Make-up Centre Friends
πβ¨β₯οΈβ₯οΈβ₯οΈβ¨βοΈ
This is a post to let you know we are still here at Chippendale and did you know that this is the 60th year of the 3 Arts Make-up Centre started by Dawn Swane in 1966 at the Strand Arcade .
Dawn relocated her business to its current home in 1978 - the building was a former shoe factory Modernistic Shoes ( William & Hill Pty Ltd ) . When Dawn first moved into the old shoe factory it had been closed down for some time , she worked quickly to transform the building into Australia's first Make-up Training college and professional make-up shop.
Since the college's closure in 2010 we have been sorting out archives and delving into hidden storage areas - last year we discovered old tea chests full of wooden shoe lasts - belonging to the building when it was a shoe factory . The Wooden shoe lasts are from the 1950's and 1960's - made from wood by a Melbourne shoe last company called G.N Raymond.
If anyone is interested in Wooden Shoe Lasts get in touch we have plenty - I thought our past customers and students maybe interested in this fascinating part of our history .
We have sold quite a few already- but there are plenty available if anyone is keen on owning a piece of Chippendale history - Or are interested in making shoes - or just like interesting industrial objects such as these. Some have bought them to look after existing shoes
Please pass on this info to anyone you know who maybe interested - Thank you
Hope you enjoy this piece of history
If you are interested in purchasing
the Wooden Shoe Last's are $12 each ( individual )
$20 for a pair
$35 for 4
$70 for 10
to bulk buys
*we also have an interesting collection of metal leather stamps - used in the factory to punch patterns into the leather - some images included - would love these to go to a good home
PS :- We have sold out of larger sizes 91/2 and beyond and sizes 4 and smaller - but we have plenty in most sizes in between
The shop is still open - but our hours are limited ( 9.30 am to 2pm ) Thursday and Fridays - other days by appointment
Also listed on Facebook Marketplace
* I have included some images of shoes that were made at the factory in the late 1960's

Sadly after 52 years in business the 3 Arts Make-up Centre will be closing down.
Dawn Swane created the 3 Arts Make-up Centre , Australiaβs first professional Make-up Training College and Shop for theatre ,film, TV and fashion, in 1966.
The Shop and College was initially in Sydneyβs CBD in well known retail establishment the Strand Arcade , 1970 Dawn was invited to move into a small section of the Conservatorium of Music, in 1979 Dawn made the bold move to relocate and expand her College and shop within an old shoe factory warehouse in Chippendale.
In 1981 and 1984 Dawn organised 2 successful exhibitions at Sydneyβs Opera House. These Exhibitions showcased Make-up as an art form. The exhibition showcased make-up in all forms and covered work from local and international make-up artists .
In 1993 the College was the first institution in Australia to offer nationally accredited courses in Make-up .The College took the name Art & Technology of Make-up College , whilst the shop continued with the 3 Arts Make-up Centre name. Many of the collegeβs graduates have been lauded around the world and at home for their unique skills in the field of Make-up .
The Art & Technology of Make-up College stopped offering full-time courses in 2018 when Dawn retired. The 3 Arts Make-up Centre ( Shop) has continued to trade until now, when the decision has been made to bow out gracefully with acknowledgement of Dawnβs proud legacy.
The 3 Arts Make-up Centre shop has supplied the Film , TV , Theatre , Fashion and Education System around Australia, offering expert advice and access to products in a time when sourcing these specialist products pre-internet was very difficult . Dawn sought out professional brands from throughout the world and even created a few of her own Australian made products a long the way.
We have launched out Closing Down Sale Catalogue - and invite anyone with an interest in make-up to come and visit us whilst this landmark business is still open to the public.
