Flat felled seams are one of those finishes that make a garment feel genuinely well made, clean on the inside, strong at the seam, and with that satisfying double row of topstitching on the outside that looks like you really knew what you were doing.

They take a little more time than a standard seam finish, but once you've done one you'll want to put them everywhere. Jeans, jackets, shirts — anything that needs to last.

We've broken the whole process down into six steps on the blog, with diagrams for each stage. It's more straightforward than it looks.

Our full tutorial is on the blog but save these tips for later.

A quote from one of our Making, Again members, but it could be so many of us.

So much of what we do as makers happens away from the machine. The planning, the daydreaming, the pulling fabric from the shelf just to hold it for a while. It all counts.
Making, Again exists for exactly this reason. It's a space that holds all of it, the stitching and the thinking and the not-quite-ready-yet. No pressure to have a finished project every month. Just permission to be in your making practice, whatever that looks like right now.

If that sounds like something you need, the link is in bio.

Topstitching is one of those techniques that looks simple until you're actually doing it and then suddenly you're unpicking a perfectly straight line for the third time and questioning all your life choices.

The good news is that beautiful topstitching really does come down to a handful of things: the right needle, the right thread, a longer stitch, and slowing way down. That last one is the one most of us skip. It's also the one that makes the biggest difference.

We've just published a full Q&A on the blog covering everything — needle and thread choices, stitch length, tension, how to keep your lines straight, and why you should almost never backstitch at the end. Link in bio.

Save this one for your next project!

Be honest. Does your sewing slow down in summer? Pick up in winter? Do you only ever finish something the night before you need to wear it? We've been thinking about how seasons shape our making habits and we want to know where you land. Drop your season in the comments!

A love letter to every body that has ever stood in front of a mirror in a half-finished pair of pants and thought "why."

Why does it fit in the waist but not the seat. Why is there a mysterious pocket of fabric at the front. Why does the crotch sit somewhere it absolutely should not. Why do these pull across the thighs but gap at the back. WHY.

Here is the thing. It is not you. It is the pattern. And we have a tutorial for basically all of it.

Full tummy? Sorted. Flat seat? Covered. Thighs that refuse to be contained? We see you. Crotch length that is either too long or too short and somehow both at once? Yes, that one too. Want to add an elastic back waist so your pants feel like wearing a hug? Absolutely. Need to grade between sizes because your waist and hips did not get the memo to be the same size? Same, honestly.

We're not saying we have a tutorial for every single body on earth, but we try.

Check out our tutorial archives. Go forth. Make the pants. You've got this.
