Not all double prams fold the same

The Bugaboo Donkey is a great double, but the fold was problematic for my compact SUV. It was awkward to fit and required a little bit of tetris and delicate stacking to get the tailgate to close. I swapped to the Uppababy Vista primarily because of its fold and the difference in the boot made it worthwhile. As a single it takes up just over half the space, and a double nearly all, with a little space left over for a couple of bags. Both Vista configurations allow the parcel shelf to close.

Uppababy Vista V2

It’s an Uppababy kind of mood at the moment. I sold three prams to cover the cost of buying this and it was definitely a bit of a splurge. It was twice as much as any of the other prams I’ve bought but I can’t be convinced it wasn’t worth it.

The Vista V2 is a double pram that very neatly converts to a single pram. Previously I had kept a Bugaboo Donkey as a double pram for baby play dates, but keeping an entire seperate pram took up a lot of space in my study and was a chore to swap over the prams in the car. By swapping to the Vista, it now lives in the car, and swapping to double mode only requires throwing in the extra seat. The Vista fits neatly in the back of my compact SUV, and even in double mode, I still have room for a few bags of shopping. In single mode I can fit a bag or two of dog biscuits which has been a benchmark for a lot of my prams over the past two years. Not many passed.

The Vista basket is the biggest I’ve ever owned. It’s rated to 15kgs and neatly holds a large load of groceries - or a toddler. And you don’t have to sacrifice your basket space when carrying two children. In single mode it feels a little under utilised, although still a great pram, but it really shines in double mode. It’s remarkable how easy it is to push around over 40kgs of toddler and pram and still have capacity to add in extras to the basket. The suspension and handling have really been built to carry big loads.

The draw backs of its size are its size when out and about. It’s a very wide pram for the inline style, and in double mode you are quite long. It doesn’t quite have the road train feel other front loading doubles I’ve tried have, but you notice the extra length when turning corners. The rear wheel width is wider than the Bugaboo Donkey in Mono (single) configuration, although the Donkey has as extra storage basket to the side. It’s easy to clip corners with the rear wheels, and would be the biggest hurdle of the Vista after its price tag. If I didn’t want something I could use as a double, the Cruz would be a more sensible choice just based on width and practicality, although the extra basket space the width provides is very handy.

Over all its a great pram to use. I love using it. I love how easy it is to fold and store in my car. I love the snack tray that keeps my daughter entertained for as long as I want to wander the shops. I love how it looks although I need to buy a new set of Donkey hood clamps so I can use my floral hood again, the hood clamps I used on the Cruz were sold with my Donkey. It’s ridiculous how the right pram can make your day when out shopping, but this one is pretty great.

I’m an Uppababy convert and the Vista V2 has me sold

Score Card
Looks - 10/10 (I love the look of the Uppababy V2. I’m not a huge fan of the black on black combo but it’s what was available on marketplace at the right price at the right time. The other colourways look fantastic, so it didn’t lose points)
Ease of use - 10/10 (My earlier Vista was a bit rough and not even that old. This one has been looked after and is a beautiful pram to use)
Baby comfort - 10/10 (Usually in double prams the seats get smaller, but I haven’t found this in the Uppababy main seat. It’s a big sell for me to be able to use the Vista as a single pram without losing space or sacrificing comfort. My daughter loves the snack tray. She just loves this pram in general, she’s old enough now to chose not to sit in a pram but continues to sit in this one)
Folding - 10/10 (I’ve given it a high score in comparison to other double prams. It folds in one piece with two seats attached, although doesn’t fit in my car when folded that way. In single mode it fits in easily in one piece)
Cleaning - 6/10 (The biggest downfall with the Uppababy and the non-removable solid support in the seat)
Ease of repair - NA (No repairs have been necessary. This is partly a reflection on its quality, however its not designed to be easily fixed and this may become a problem with older models)
Overall love - 10/10 (Another high score. I chose the Vista V2 over the Cruz V2 because I love having a double that serves well as a single, but they’re both excellent prams for their own markets)

Uppababy Cruz V2

I swapped/borrowed the Uppababy Cruz with a friend for 5 months and it was the end of my Bugaboo loyalty. I’ve been a big fan of Bugaboo for as long as my pram journey has run, but the Uppababy ticks more boxes and I’ve made the switch.

The Cruz V2 is the second iteration of the Alta/Cruz series, and is a single pram with big brother Vista the workhorse and double pram option in the Uppababy line. The Cruz is a smaller, lighter, more cost effective option and would rank as a competitor to the Bugaboo Fox, or the earlier Cameleon. Prior to this pram I had an older model Vista that had lived a hard life and I had been too harsh on the Uppababy quality. This Cruz proved why Uppababy are quickly taking over the luxury pram world.

There was very little I could fault in the Cruz V2. The basket was the largest of any single child prams I’ve owned, the fold was effortless and hard to get wrong. The steering and manoeuvrability in tight spaces was smooth and required very little effort. The Cruz did labour under a heavy load of groceries in a way the Vista didn’t, but the trade off was an overall lighter pram.

There was a hack I found online of using Bugaboo Donkey hoods on the Cruz, which I did with the Baby Moo Maa custom hood I found on Marketplace. The fit was sloppy and I had to use the Donkey hood clamps and rods to make it work, with the clamps only sort of fitting and needing to be held in place with rubber bands. The final look however was pretty stunning and was the cherry on top for me with the Cruz.

When it was time to give the Cruz back I decided it was time to condense the pram collection and exchange keeping two every day prams for one. I had kept my Bugaboo Donkey as my designated double pram for baby play dates, but I was unhappy with the way it fit in our compact SUV for an every day pram. I considered buying myself another Cruz V2 after loving it so much in my borrow period, but instead bought a Vista to double as both my every day pram and my double pram when needed.

It’s earned itself a high score!

Score Card
Looks - 10/10 (I love the Uppababy style, especially the V2)
Ease of use - 10/10 (excellent quality, a wonderful pram to use)
Baby comfort - 10/10 (A solid, long lasting seat design. I love the adjustable foot rest that gives more versatility over the Bugaboo design. A great snack tray for older toddlers)
Folding - 9/10 (big fold compared to some other single prams, but great for my compact SUV and small sedan)
Cleaning - 6/10 (Seat body difficult to fit in my 6kg washer, hood machine washable)
Ease of repair - 7/10 (Hard to rate. The front wheels pulled apart for cleaning but most other components were not designed to be repaired easily. Luckily no repairs were needed)
Overall love - 10/10 (The Cruz V2 was a solid pram. I wouldn’t chose an Original Cruz, but the V2 is an easy recommendation)

Milly + Coup Update

We’ve outgrown the Milly + Coup Milo pram. It’s a sad day, it has been one of my favourite prams, but I’ve listed the Milo for sale. She still ā€˜fits’, but it’s no longer comfortable for long strolls. The seating platform is too shallow and her legs have to awkwardly fold on top of the foot rest.

For comparison - My daughter is 20 months and 85% height. She’s average weight. This pram is best for smaller, younger toddlers or a spare pram.

Picture from February at 15 months.

Bugaboo Fox

I sold my Fox recently because I wasn’t using it; it was a hassle to get in and out of the boot of my small sedan; but I regret selling it. Perhaps absence made my heart grow fonder, but it was the nicest pram to use that I’ve had, and I’ve struggled to find comparable since.

The Fox1 had a known fault to its central locking and I’ve written a seperate post on this in the past. It had its quirks and I’d learnt to work around it. Once set up the Fox was a dream to use, it had a great seat, a great harness system, a fantastic under basket storage that was easily accessible all round and the Bugaboo quality really shone through when on the go. I had a snack tray and a cute pram liner and I’ve really started going for pale grey since, the colour was great. I loved the options available for Bugaboo, I considered getting a Toucan hood back for it, or maybe an abstract purple bird print; there were lots of accessories available.

The fold size was awkward. Even when fully functional, a single piece fold was obnoxiously big and would only ever fit in an SUV. Both of our cars are sedans, so it needed a two piece fold and it took up the entire boot in both cars. In the larger sedan the pieces would neatly sit side by side, but in my smaller sedan I had to stack the pieces and occasionally the seat frame would rub the underside of the boot. Unloading I would have to take out the seat frame and sit it on the ground while I unloaded the chassis. I hated sitting the seat frame on the ground to get dirty.

Unfortunately it was the most I’ve ever spent on a pram, and now the most I’ve ever lost when selling a pram. It was my first major failure and the first pram I couldn’t fix 100%. In hindsight it wasn’t worth selling.

On the upside, what I sold my Fox for, I paid the same for an Uppababy Vista, and so far it’s been a lot of fun. Not comparable in quality, but a worthwhile pram regardless. In the end I can’t keep everything, and some of the favourites do have to go sometimes.

Score Card
Looks - 10/10 (I love the look of the Fox and I love the options for customisation)
Ease of use - 9/10 (If in full working order)
Baby comfort - 10/10 (My daughter loved it. It has a great upright seating position and the extra snack tray I bought was very popular)
Folding - 1/10 (The Fox1 had a major fault in its central locking and folding and unfolding was a disaster)
Size when folded - 3/10 (pretty ridiculous when folded. Didn’t fit in my compact sedan and barely fit in my large sedan)
Cleaning - 10/10 (Everything was machine washable and pretty reasonable to remove)
Ease of repair - 5/10 (Hard to rate. I could disassemble everything easily and make repairs, but the repairs could only do so much to counter the problematic central locking design)
Overall love - 8/10 (As bitter as I was about the central locking problem, I loved my Fox and its one of the very few prams I regret selling. I miss my Fox)
