What a fantastic post! Don’t overthink it, Dinner is as complicated as you make it.

If the words “meal planning” make you want to hide under a blanket, keep reading 😅

You don’t need a complicated plan or a colour-coded spreadsheet. You just need a simple system that holds up on the tough days.

Here it is:

The 3 Base Cooks Method

Cook 3 simple foundations once, and they stretch into multiple meals across the whole week.
No fancy chef skills required. Just clever, practical cooking.

✅ Base Cook #1: The Roast Tray

Toss together whatever you’ve got — 🎃 pumpkin + 🍠 sweet potato + 🧅 onion + 🥕 carrots + 🥒 zucchini
A drizzle of oil, salt and pepper. Into the oven. Done.

This becomes:
• A hearty dinner alongside eggs, chicken or sausages
• Wraps loaded with lettuce, cheese and your favourite sauce
• Fresh lunch bowls with avo and a squeeze of lemon
• Toasties or jaffles the next day

✅ Base Cook #2: The Pot (Soup or Curry)

Start with 🧅 onion + garlic + any veg that needs using up + stock or water. Add curry spices for a warming kick, or keep it simple and nourishing.
Blend it smooth or leave it chunky — your call.

This becomes:
• Dinner with crusty toast
• A ready-made lunch the next day
• Portions for the freezer on those can’t-cook nights
• A thick sauce base spooned over rice or potatoes

✅ Base Cook #3: The Pan Mix

A quick sauté of greens + onion + whatever’s crunchy in the crisper — carrot, zucchini, capsicum.

This becomes:
• Stir-fry night with rice or noodles
• A delicious omelette filling
• Fried rice the next day
• A “loaded potato” topping
• An easy side dish for just about anything

Why does this actually work?

It cuts out that daily dinner decision paralysis.

Instead of staring into the fridge thinking “What on earth do I cook tonight??”
You think: “What can I remix from what’s already prepped?”

That simple shift means you:
✅ Spend less
✅ Waste less
✅ Rely less on takeaway
✅ And still eat wholesome, real food all week

Bonus tip: The “use first” order

To keep waste to a minimum, work through your fresh produce in this order:

🥬 Greens + herbs → 🍓 Soft fruits + berries → 🥒 Zucchini, capsicum, tomatoes, cucumber → 🥕 Carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato → 🥔 Potatoes, onions, citrus

Shop local, cook smart, eat well. 🌿

John Relph sent a photo; “In WW2 my Mum had a refrigerator too! Very rare back then. The Sunbeam Mixmaster was made in USA. My Photo.”
Thanks John. According to Australian Food Timeline “Sunbeam can trace its Australian history back to 1902 when the American Chicago Flexible Shaft Company (later the Cooper Engineering Company) set up a business to make shearing equipment in Sydney. The company became Sunbeam in 1946 and the first appliance they made in Australia was the Sunbeam Mixmaster. This American-designed product became famous in Australia and around the world. The Sunbeam Mixmaster was considered essential equipment for preparing that Australian classic, the pavlova. Sunbeam became Australian-owned in 1987.”
I remember the smell - very distinctive. Who remembers Mum making ice cream with the Mixmaster?

Going out today in the 39 degree heat to get medication was not the plan but I was rewarded with this little haul from the Corryong op shop.
1. Bartlett Collins Milk glass Cookie jar. 1950’s. An early birthday present for myself 🥳
2. Vintage lolly jar- This will be used to display some of our homemade confectionery that will be available soon.
3. Noritake Rosemist- This is a discontinued pattern that was produced from 1961-1968. I never met a piece of Noritake that I didn’t like. This will be added to the other pieces available for purchase in our Tumbarumba store.
Did you find any special pieces recently? Let me know in the comments.
