People often ask us where the name "Southern Man" came from. To find the answer, you have to look past the shopfront and go back to the turntable.

When our doors first opened in April 1974, the name was borrowed from this 1970 Neil Young masterpiece. It wasn't a celebration of the status quo—it was a fierce call for progress and "Southern change."

Over the last 50 years, the meaning of our name shifted away from the record sleeve and deeply into the geography of our home. To us, it’s a legacy title. It represents the raw energy of the Southern Ocean that powers our swells, the spirit of the NSW South Coast, and a state of mind that belongs to every single person who finds their freedom in our local waters.

We’ve updated the space, but the needle is still in the groove. Established 1974. Built for everyone.
