I feel I have unintentionally been creating this collection for the last few years, collecting materials with local provenance that are important for me, from outback Queensland to use at some point in the future. Like my insight knew this collection was coming before I understood myself. I have been using Queensland Sapphires and opals for a while now in custom work and my own designs, but it wasn’t until last year when I returned home that I finally recognised what my intuition had been leading me to.
That pull to return home and quiet yearning to be there, despite having built a beautiful life here in Tasmania. The beauty in the imperfections and ruggedness, of the in between. Spending a lot of time on my own, in my travels to far Northwest Queensland I’ve had so much time to ponder, to journal, to write and reflect.
Some of the pieces I’ve made represent Life. It’s been weathered, corroded and at times eating the shiny surface away, but it only makes things more beautiful, if you really pay attention. Once the surface has been taken away only to reveal more depth, more character, more meaning, more beauty.
A reminder that there is always light shining from the darkness, and love will always find a way to move forward and grow.
