In an Instagram post tagged to San Diego Comic-Con, The Hate U Give actor Amandla Stenberg announced that they’ve joined the cast of The Acolyte in a mysterious role that may have something to do with the Dark Side judging from their Darth Maul jersey.

Shazam! brought a lighthearted tone to DC’s theatrical run when it debuted in 2019, and the sequel looks to do much the same later this year — at least if the debut trailer is anything to go by. It’s called Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, DC revealed a first look at the superhero adventure. It starts off with the titular star (Zachary Levi) having some confidence issues (seriously, who can compete with Aquaman?) and espousing his love for the Fast and the Furious, before revealing a new villain played by none other than Helen Mirren. Other new cast members include Rachel Zegler and Lucy Liu. Also, there’s a very big dragon creature.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is a film meant to do a lot of things. It’s the third film in the Jon Watts-directed MCU trilogy of Spider-Man films, concluding a storyline for Tom Holland’s incarnation of Peter Parker. It’s a direct sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home, picking up where the cliffhanger credit scene of the 2019 film left off. It’s the continuation of the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe and its “Phase Four” story arc. And it’s a tribute to the past 20 years of Spider-Man movies.

Like the film before it, Titan’s The Man Who Fell to Earth will tell the story of Thomas Jerome Newton, a humanoid alien with Bowie’s signature heterochromatic eyes who comes to Earth on a desperate mission in search of water that his home planet desperately needs. In a press release about the new book, Watters reflected on how the original story was always a rumination on humanity’s relationship with Earth’s natural resources, and how he plans to revisit those themes through a contemporary lens.

Variety reports that Netflix has greenlit Heartstopper for two more installments with Oseman slated to return as writer and executive producer. Like the graphic novel, Heartstopper tells the story of how Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) fall in love while attending an all-boys grammar school. Heartstopper’s first season focuses on the beginning of Charlie and Joe’s romance with plot points pulled from the graphic novel’s first and second volumes. There’s currently no word on when production on Heartstopper’s next seasons will kick off, which means there’s plenty of time to get caught up on the books to get a sense of where the show’s likely headed.

Bloomberg reports a licensing deal with Netflix will provide funding for the production of Johnny Depp’s first film following the actor’s bitter defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard for describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse” in an op-ed.

According to the report, Netflix is footing some of the bill for French actress / director Maiwenn Le Besco’s La Favorite, a period film centering on France’s King Louis XV (Depp) and Madame Jeanne Bécu du Barry (Le Besco), the king’s third mistress whose association with him ultimately led to her being guillotined during the French Revolution. Though neither Netflix nor Why Not Productions, the French studio behind the project, have announced La Favorite, the film is apparently slated for a 2023 release in French theaters and has been licensed to stream on Netflix France 15 months later.

Sony is removing access to hundreds of movies and TV shows on its PlayStation Store service next month, meaning users that previously paid for titles such as Paddington and The Hunger Games will no longer be able to watch them. The shutdown affects users in Germany and Austria, according to legal notices posted on the two regional sites, and covers films produced by StudioCanal.

Affected titles include Paddington and John Wick.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) has signed on to direct the next Captain America film that will pick up some time after Sam Wilson’s confrontation with John Walker and the Flag Smashers. Onah joins The Falcon and The Winter Soldier creator Malcolm Spellman and series staff writer Dalan Musson, who will be scripting the new film together. Currently, no other details about Captain America 4 have been released, but it’s quite possible Marvel may have more news about it to share at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Netflix’s “global fan event” is returning for a second-straight year. The streaming service announced that Tudum — not to be confused with Netflix’s troubled fan site of the same name — will be streaming on YouTube on September 24th. There aren’t many details yet, but Netflix says the event will cover more than 100 movies and series. And the day will be divided by region: things will kick off with news from Korea, followed by India, the US, Europe, and Latin America, before closing out with Japan.

At last year’s Tudum, Netflix showed off some of its biggest series, including Bridgerton, Stranger Things, and The Witcher, while also revealing first looks at the likes of The Sandman and Cowboy Bebop. Outside of Tudum, Netflix also has its Geeked Week event; earlier this year, the company detailed a huge slate of programming ranging from the first teaser for Tim Burton’s Wednesday to a number of notable indie games.

It’ll be streaming on September 24th.
