Diamond World, owned by Dilip Kumar Agarwala, a member of the Awami League's Trade and Industry Subcommittee, has allegedly evaded Tk25,200 crore in VAT over the past 15 years. Sources claim that top figures from the former Awami League government intervened to cover up the investigation, leading to the transfer of officials involved in the probe. Additionally, Agarwala is accused of selling glass as diamonds as several staff members of Diamond World said he sold valuable glass in the name of diamonds, deceiving customers about the authenticity of the jewelry.The company also imposed conditions that customers could only exchange or sell these "diamonds" at their shop. Agarwala reportedly used his connections with high-ranking officials to halt investigations and avoid legal action. He has also been linked to gold smuggling and was accused in a murder case related to a student's death during an anti-discrimination movement.
