George VI was King of the United Kingdom until his death in 1952. Our current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II succeeded her father, and the coronation was held in 1953. The RSN was asked to design and embellish the Robe of Estate for Her Majesty the Queen in 1953. The theme was peace and plenty and this was represented by wheat ears and olive branches and consists of silk velvet and metal thread embroidery and ermine. This sampler was made by the RSN for the Coronation regalia exhibition that went to Birmingham and Leeds in 1953 when the Robe itself was on display elsewhere. It also features the 18 varieties of gold thread that were used in the work. Her Majesty the Queen becomes Patron on the death of her mother in 2002. The relationship between the RSN and the Royal family has since remained strong with commissions continuing throughout Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

We ❤️ William Morris

The Arts and Crafts Movement was in full swing during the early days of the RSN, one of the most notable figures, William Morris, whose name is synonymous with the movement and whose designs are recognisable and praised to this day features in the early history of the organisation. A version of 'Peacock and Vine' worked on by the RSN was sent to the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876. William Morris agreed to the RSN making up his designs for the show as it was a good way for his work to be seen in America.
