Most sourcing contracts have "AQL 2.5" buried somewhere in the quality clause. Almost nobody asks what it actually means until a shipment gets rejected.

AQL — Acceptable Quality Limit — is an ISO 2859-1 standard that sets how many units get inspected from a lot, and how many defects are allowed before the whole shipment fails. For a 5,000-piece order, that's a sample of 200 units, not all 5,000. Get the sample size or the acceptance number wrong, and you're either over-inspecting or accepting more defects than you realize.

We built a free AQL calculator that gives you the exact sample size, accept number, and reject number for any lot size and defect category — the same ISO 2859-1 tables third-party inspectors use.

Useful whether SDF is your manufacturer or not.

If you're a UK fashion brand and your manufacturer can't explain how they comply with the Modern Slavery Act, that's a sourcing risk hiding in plain sight.

The Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires UK businesses above a certain size to report on steps taken to prevent slavery and human trafficking in their supply chains — and that obligation flows down to whoever you're sourcing from, audited or not.

Our process is built around this from the start: signed NDAs before any design is shared, transparent fabric sourcing, and certifications (SA8000, BSCI, WRAP) that specifically audit labor practices, not just product quality.

If your current supplier can't produce documentation for this when asked, that's the time to find out — before a compliance review does it for you.

The moment a brand hesitates the most isn't placing the order. It's sending the tech pack to a factory on the other side of the world for the first time.

That hesitation is reasonable. Designs, colorways, and sourcing details are the brand's actual IP, and most manufacturers ask you to "trust them" before anything is signed.

We don't ask for that. SDF Clothing has a free, instant NDA generator — enter your details, get a ready-to-sign PDF, backed by Bangladesh's Contract Act 1872 and Copyright Act 2000, before a single design file changes hands.

Sign it before you share anything, not after.

A DTC streetwear brand had a problem most buyers don't think about until it costs them: the hoodie a customer received didn't quite match the one in the product photo.

Sample, first run, reorder — three slightly different shades of the same color. Customers noticed. Returns went up.

The fix wasn't really about dyeing. It was documentation — one Pantone reference per colorway, every dye lot tested against it before cutting, fabric rejected if it didn't match, even mid-production.

Twelve months later: zero color rejections.

It's a boring fix. Boring fixes are usually the ones that actually work.

A shipment held at customs because of one wrong digit in an HS code is an expensive lesson — demurrage fees, missed retail windows, a customs broker calling at 6am.

HS codes for garments aren't one universal number. The first 6 digits are standardized globally, but everything after that is country-specific — the USA uses 10-digit HTS codes, the UK uses 10, the EU uses 8-digit TARIC codes. A code that's correct for a US shipment can be incomplete for an EU one.

We built a free, searchable HS code reference covering knitted garments, woven garments, fabrics, trims, and packaging, with direct links to each country's official customs authority — so you verify before you ship, not after.

GOTS certification isn't a one-time achievement. It's renewed, audited, every single year.

In May 2026, SDF Clothing completed GOTS 7.0 recertification across all production lines — the latest version of the standard, with stricter chain-of-custody and chemical management requirements than GOTS 6.0.

A lot of manufacturers list "GOTS certified" on their website without saying which version, or when it was last audited. That gap matters more than it should — GOTS 7.0 requirements are meaningfully tighter than older versions, and a certificate from three audit cycles ago isn't the same guarantee as a current one.

If a supplier tells you they're GOTS certified, the next question is simple: which version, and when was the last audit.

sdfltd.com/certifications

SDF Clothing holds 13 international certifications — GOTS, OEKO-TEX, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, BSCI, SEDEX, WRAP, GRS, BCI, SA8000, ZDHC, C-TPAT, and LEED. Compliant for EU, UK, and USA markets.

A European activewear brand came to us with one specific problem: their season calendar couldn't survive a 14-day sample wait.

Every cycle, that two-week gap pushed their launch back. By the time samples arrived, the trend window had narrowed.

We restructured the sampling queue for repeat seasonal clients — fabric pre-confirmed, pattern and cutting stages run in parallel instead of one after another.

Sample lead time went from 14 days to 7.

If your collection calendar runs on a manufacturer's sample turnaround, that number matters more than almost anything else in the relationship.

23/06/2026

A garment that fits perfectly in the showroom and shrinks two sizes after the first wash isn't a manufacturing defect on paper. It's a pattern cutting allowance nobody calculated.

Most shrinkage problems trace back to one missing step: the pattern was cut to the finished measurement, not the pre-shrinkage measurement. Cotton knit can lose 8-12% in length after washing. If that wasn't added back into the cut, the garment was always going to come back small.

We built a free shrinkage calculator that does the math most factories skip: warp shrinkage, weft shrinkage, relaxation shrinkage, and the pattern allowance you actually need — by fabric type, construction, wash temperature, and cycle count.

Before you approve a tech pack, run the fabric spec through it. Takes under a minute.
