Deze ochtend sprak ik met over de (on)zin van matcha. My key takeaways:

1) Know which matcha you are consuming, as there is a lot of junk out there

Fancy packaging and high prices don’t necessarily mean high quality. Ask questions and be critical.
Like what’s the origin (country, region), is it single origin or a blend of various farmers, when’s the harvest (1st, 2nd..), which cultivar is being used?

2) YES matcha does have health benefits. eg it can increase focus, it’s naturally rich in antioxidants etc. but if you start adding syrup and other stuff, obv you start diluting your healthy drink. Also if your matcha isn’t pesticide free, you will consume these pesticides..

So for max benefit drink matcha pure and pesticide free. If you drink it pure, choose a ceremonial grade. For lattes you don’t need a ceremonial grade (all purpose will do, only use cooking grade for desserts, not for drinks).

3) Sensitive stomach? Don’t drink matcha on an empty stomach, matcha contains catechins and can stimulate stomach acid.

I sometimes feel like such a (wannabe) gangster sitting across the table with these prominent tea farmers, discussing quality, quantities and forecasts 😅.

Sampling the best they have to offer. Visiting their gardens to check if everything is going according to plan and if there’s anything I should know about. Let’s not forget the bath houses and bonding over drinks and food, like all real gangsters do 😆.

I’m now making my way back to Europe after a first nomadic winter abroad where I’ll be staying for the next couple of months. It’s going to be an exciting summer with so many stories and tea to share 🍃 .

Just arrived in Japan where I’ll be meeting with some of my favourite tea farmers and discuss the 2025 harvest. On Sunday morning April 6 I will release a pre-order Japanese tea package for 20 lucky customers, sales will end after 72h. Dm to gain early access!
