Quiz time. The average household wash load runs at around 40°C. At what temperature should woollens be washed?
A. 40°
B. 50°
C. 20°
D. 30°

TIP: IWTO highlights that woollens can be washed at notably lower temperatures than the household average, and that lower temperatures combined with less frequent washing deliver real savings on water and energy. Cooler washes also help woollens hold their softness, shape and colour, wash after wash.

Take your best guess below. We'll reveal the answer in our next stories.

Small Scale, Massive Potential: Inside Canada’s Wool Industry 🌾

Did you know that Canada recognizes 63 different sheep breeds across 8,500 farms? While Canada is a smaller producer on the global stage (around 822,000 sheep), its diversity is its strength!

Here is the current snapshot of Canadian wool:

🐑 Most sheep are raised nationwide for meat, making wool a valuable co-product.

🧶 The average micron range is 27–29. Meaning it is sturdy, resilient, and absolutely perfect for interior textiles and artisanal crafts.

🚀 While a lot of the national clip has historically been discarded or exported, things are changing. A thriving cottage wool industry is booming, and there’s a major push to rebuild mid-scale processing right here at home to support local creators.

💚Most legal frameworks regarding animal welfare and enforcement are overseen at the provincial level, supported by NFACC's Canadian Livestock Code of Practice.

IWTO joined forces with MEPs and scientists to ensure that Europe’s "Green Deal" works for, not against, natural fibres.

At the heart of the discussion? Fixing the PEF (Product Environmental Footprint).

Currently, the EU’s "green math" doesn’t quite add up for natural materials like wool and leather. Along with MEPs Benoît Cassart, Alexander Bernhuber, and Maria Grapini, we are highlighting these gaps and advocating for a fairer system that rewards sustainable land management.

Why this matters for farmers and the planet:
By refining the PEF methodology, we can move from "damage accounting" to truly rewarding circular bioeconomy assets.

The joint letter to the European Commission calls for 5 key improvements:

✅ Fairness for Natural Fibres: Ending the bias against renewable materials.
✅ Realistic Land Use: Reflecting the diversity of European farming.
✅ Better Biodiversity Metrics: Capturing real, on-farm positive impacts.
✅ Microplastic Accountability: Distinguishing biodegradable fibres from synthetics.
✅ Valuing Wool: Moving past the "regulatory paradox" that treats wool as waste.

We are proud to promote a science-led approach that protects our rural economies and promotes a truly sustainable textile future. 🌍

Why Wool is the Ultimate Pilates Partner 🧘‍♀️✨
Reformer Pilates was born from ingenuity, Joseph Pilates originally used bedsprings to rehabilitate injured soldiers. Today, it’s a global movement focused on strength, precision, and long-term wellness. But if you’re practicing "slow fitness" for your health, have you looked at the label on your leggings? Most activewear is essentially plastic . It’s time to pair the body’s intelligence with nature’s original performance fibre: Wool. 🐑

Here is why your next session belongs in wool:

1. Dynamic Support of Body Temperature
Pilates involves cycles of intense movement and mindful rest. Wool uses a natural process called heat of sorption to generate a tiny bit of warmth as it absorbs moisture.

The Result: You stay warm during rest phases without feeling clammy. Wool manages your temperature so you can spend your energy on your core, not on shivering or overheating.

2. Air It Out, and It’s Ready to Go Again; Less Laundry, More Flow 🧺
Synthetics trap bacteria and odours after just one session. Wool is naturally odour-resistant.

The Hack: Just hang your wool gear in a steamy bathroom or fresh air. Wrinkles drop out, odours vanish, and it’s ready for your next class. Fewer washes mean a longer life for your gear and more time for you.

3. Consider the Microplastics🌍
Did you know a single wash of polyester can release 6 million microplastics? Wool is made of the same protein as human hair. If a fibre sheds, it biodegrades, returning to the earth as nutrients—not pollution.

The Verdict: If you’re investing in your long-term well-being, what you wear on your body matters as much as what you do with it.

Ready to swap ? Experience the dynamic breathability of wool in your next class.
