We are the generation of letter sets, marbles, Pogs, Tamagotchis, MSN Messenger, and video rental stores.

The generation that stayed outside until the streetlights came on. The generation that grew up without smartphones but somehow became adults in a completely digital world.

And now, suddenly, we’re turning 40.

According to society, we’re the grown-ups now. The responsible ones. The people who are supposed to have answers, raise children, build careers, and know what they’re doing.

But deep down, many of us still feel like the kid who spent hours trading marbles at recess, collecting Pogs, decorating school notebooks, and rushing home to watch Saturday morning cartoons.

How did that happen so fast?

One minute we were making mixtapes, logging into MSN, and writing notes on fancy stationery.

The next, we’re discussing mortgages, retirement plans, and back pain.

The truth is, I don’t think most millennials feel as old as the number says.

We’re just kids from the 80s and 90s trying our best to navigate adulthood while carrying a lifetime of memories from a world that no longer exists.

Tell me I’m not the only one who sometimes feels like the 90s were only ten years ago…

Wij zijn de generatie van briefpapier, knikkers, flippo’s, Tamagotchi’s, MSN en videotheken.

De generatie die buiten speelde tot de straatverlichting aanging. Die opgroeide zonder smartphones, maar volwassen werd in een wereld die volledig digitaal is.

En nu worden we ineens 40.

Volgens de wereld zijn we volwassenen. Verantwoordelijk. Volwassen genoeg om advies te geven, kinderen op te voeden en belangrijke beslissingen te nemen.

Maar ergens vanbinnen zijn we nog steeds dat kind dat zijn flippo-verzameling bewaakte alsof het goud was.

Vertel me dat ik niet de enige ben die zich soms afvraagt waar de tijd gebleven is…
