Set within the serene landscape of Queenstown, New Zealand, Central Otago House is a concept by architecture studio Seear-Budd Ross that takes its cues from the stillness and scale of the surrounding mountains. Conceived as an understated sculpture within the landscape, the house is an exercise in balance between shelter and openness, privacy and connection. At its centre, a quiet courtyard brings light deep into the plan, while carefully framed openings keep the surrounding landscape present throughout.

That continuity comes through in the materials: natural timber, stone, metal and heavy concrete volumes are brought together with restraint. Light and shadow become architectural forces in their own right, particularly around the entrance. Inside, spaces of retreat sit next to transparent edges, while the courtyard introduces glimpses of a pared-back garden. The contrast between tactile, warm surfaces and the solidity of concrete gives the house its particular character: subtle, grounded and deeply connected to its setting. An approach we recognise at Bellerose too: a belief in considered design, honest materials and lasting value.

We’re back in Lille — just in time for the Braderie — with a new chapter of our city guide.
