On this day (August 24) in 1997, a week before her death. Princess Diana.

She is seen perched at the edge of a yacht named Jonikal, owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed, the father of her companion Dodi Fayed. The two had been spending that summer together in the Mediterranean, sailing between the French Riviera and the coast of Italy.

At this point in her life, Diana was both luminous and fragile. Freed from the constraints of royal life after her divorce from Prince Charles, she sought peace and independence. Yet she was also relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi, every gesture and glance magnified under the lens of the world’s fascination.

Friends later said she seemed torn between excitement for new possibilities and a deep weariness from the constant intrusion. The yacht became a temporary sanctuary, floating far enough from shore to grant her moments of stillness.

Just days later, on the night of August 31, 1997, Diana and Dodi would leave the Ritz Hotel in Paris, chased by photographers. Their car crashed in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel. Diana was only 36 years old.
