Be thankful if your story began in the arts.The entertainment industry is not just an industry. It is a training ground for character.

You learn to perform while being criticised.
You learn to create while being watched.
You learn to succeed while being discussed.

You experience rejection, comparison, betrayal, sabotage and sometimes attacks from people who once stood close enough to know your vulnerabilities.

Your work is scrutinised.
Your appearance is discussed.
Your mistakes are magnified.
Your silence is interpreted.
Your confidence is misunderstood.
And your success can suddenly make people remember versions of you that are convenient to their narrative.

If you survive that long enough, something changes inside you.

You stop being frightened by noise.

You stop believing that every accusation deserves an explanation.

You stop running behind every conversation carrying your name.

You learn that people can misunderstand you and you can still sleep.

People can dislike you and you can still deliver.

People can talk and you can still rise.

That industry taught me one particularly valuable lesson:

Never surrender your direction to people committed to distracting you.

So when I look at the different spaces I occupy today, I am grateful that my first classroom was the arts. It prepared me for rooms I had not yet entered.

It taught me how to stand when applause disappears.

How to remain composed when the room becomes hostile.

How to keep working when the conversation is no longer about the work.

And how to understand that sometimes increased scrutiny is simply the tax you pay for increased visibility.

I have already been through the fire of public opinion.

I did not come out afraid of fire.

I came out trained.

The stage gave me visibility.

The storms gave me character.

And whatever room I walk into next will meet a woman who has already learnt how to stand while the whole room is watching. Psychologically and Spiritually prepared!
