After a bit of time away from social media I am happy to finally reveal how I've been spending my summer... Renovating and gardening (and of course still sewing!)
🏡🌻🌞
I'm excited to share this new journey with you all as we have bought our first home 💛
Its taken over our lives just a bit but I will be slowly sharing the sewing projects that have kept me busy this summer as well! Including a few wedding dresses, a fun backyard project and some smaller projects as well! 🪡
Thank you for sticking with me through this hiatus and I look forward to picking things up full speed in the fall

A birthday blouse that sings of spring 🌸

This year I had the honor of making a special blouse for a friend of mine for her birthday! She grew up with childhood memories of visiting a seamstress around her birthday and having a custom dress made every year! To reignite those memories, she asked me to make her a blouse she could wear on her birthday!

Having custom made clothing is a unique experience, completely different from shopping off the rack! There is no need to deal with "standard" sizing and struggling to find the style you want.

You can have as much control as you desire every step of the way, from design and fabric selection to style and fit! Or if you need a little more guidance I'm always happy to provide advice!

Custom made clothing is the ultimate treat yourself 🥰

Hey Facebook, it's been a minute! 💛

With spring in full swing I want to do better at sharing what I'm working on behind the scenes with you all! 🌱

So first up, I made something for myself! It seems the only time I do that is when I'm testing a pattern for a project 🪡

This sweatshirt is a mock-up of the top half of a lounge set commissioned by a client.
When testing out new designs/styles I haven't drafted before it's important to sew a quick trial version using similar fabric and techniques before cutting into the client's fabric ✂️

This one wasn't perfect, I had to tweak the dropped shoulders and mock neck a bit but overall I was pleased enough with how it turned out that I decided to add it to my wardrobe! ✅

Also pictured is a cinch sac I made from a sturdy denim last summer
It's my go-to bag for walks ever since. Perfect for carrying my water bottle, phone, keys, masks (of course), sunscreen, and even a small blanket to sit on for socially distanced outdoor visits! 🌞

This dress fit the bride beautifully only a few small adjustments were needed. The armholes were too tight and the neck came up too high, both of which made for a constricting and uncomfortable fit. This bride made the tasteful choice of adding a gentle V to the neckline that framed her face and suited the timeless look 🤍

Now that wedding season is in full swing over here it's got me thinking back to some alterations and custom work I did last year!

This lovely bride had me create bridesmaids skirts for her girls as well as alter her special dress.

Bridesmaids skirts are a great affordable option that can be paired with any top your girls already have in their wardrobe! These skirts came in at only $60 each excluding materials

♻️ The story behind Sustainable Scrunchies ♻️

When I worked at a dress shop doing alterations we would frequently throw fabric cut off the hems of dresses into the garbage.
As a fabric ju**ie and someone who's well aware of the amount of textile waste that goes into landfill every year, I started asking if I could take scraps home instead.
I now have a sizeable stash of hem scraps in various fabrics and colours that I'm slowly turning into small batches of scrunchies for you!

Turning trash into treasures 🗑️➡️💖

As the year comes to a close I wanted to thank all of you for supporting me on this journey I decided to embark on this year.

Only Sunshine Sewing was born out of necessity in a time of need when I had been laid off from my job at the Stratford Festival Theatre due to Covid, and in turn was struggling financially and mentally/emotionally.

Staying home was hard and making/mending things was my creative outlet.

One morning I woke up with the name in my head - Only Sunshine Sewing. I took it as a sign from God to begin, knowing there is never a perfect time for anything. As this year has taught all of us, the only time we are guaranteed is now.

I have been overwhelmed by the support I've recieved, first from my family and friends and then from strangers turned new friends thanks to the wonderful community of small businesses here in London, in Ontario and all across Canada.

Words can't express how grateful I am to all of you for allowing me to pursue my passion in the midst of an unpredictable time.

So here's to a New Year, yes it will be filled with uncertainty but also with new goals, new friends and new memories.
