From Memory to Reality, Creating a Two Piece Dream Outfit
A friend asked me to recreate a jumper she had in the 70’s but as a two piece. The original was purple, but she wanted this one in taupe. Here’s how we went about it:
Choosing Materials: We met up to select the fabric, shirt, and pants patterns. I made a mock-up of the shirt pattern without alterations to see how it would look.
Pattern Adjustments: Upon reviewing the mock-up, I realized the pattern wasn’t quite right. With limited time before she headed to the Maritimes, I sourced a new pattern that was much closer to what we needed. We met the next day to approve the new pattern and fit the pants.
Fitting Details: During the pants fitting, we decided to add two inches to the waist for more seam allowance and shorten the legs with skinnier ankles. For the shirt, I removed the yokes on the shoulders and blended the lines to cut it as one piece, avoiding the need to match pattern lines.
Fixing Mistakes: I noticed I forgot the extra pleats at the back of the shirt after she tried it on. To fix this, I took in the side seams.
Final Result: After all these adjustments, she left with her new outfit! I’ll have to wait until she returns to see if any more changes are needed.
