From Memory to Reality, Creating a Two Piece Dream Outfit

A friend asked me to recreate a jumper she had in the 70’s but as a two piece. The original was purple, but she wanted this one in taupe. Here’s how we went about it:

Choosing Materials: We met up to select the fabric, shirt, and pants patterns. I made a mock-up of the shirt pattern without alterations to see how it would look.

Pattern Adjustments: Upon reviewing the mock-up, I realized the pattern wasn’t quite right. With limited time before she headed to the Maritimes, I sourced a new pattern that was much closer to what we needed. We met the next day to approve the new pattern and fit the pants.

Fitting Details: During the pants fitting, we decided to add two inches to the waist for more seam allowance and shorten the legs with skinnier ankles. For the shirt, I removed the yokes on the shoulders and blended the lines to cut it as one piece, avoiding the need to match pattern lines.

Fixing Mistakes: I noticed I forgot the extra pleats at the back of the shirt after she tried it on. To fix this, I took in the side seams.

Final Result: After all these adjustments, she left with her new outfit! I’ll have to wait until she returns to see if any more changes are needed.

Check out the pictures of the process and final outfit! Don’t forget to share this with friends and follow for updates on more sewing projects.

Turning Threads into Treasures: The Story of Aurorawear's First Yarn Accessory
Today we have pictures from the start to the end of the bouquet journey.

It took a bit of time to make, but this is the first time Aurorawear has worked with yarn to create an accessory rather than a garment.

What was initially intended for a wedding has turned into a great learning experience and a memento that will last a lifetime.

The most amazing thing was turning yarn and dowel into a smile.

After a short break to refine the method that will be used for fittings, Aurorawear will get back to what we do best: making garments.

A Stem To Stand On

A quick little update about the reversible dolls for the flower girl.

Here the head and stem are attached together.

There is folded and taped wire inside of the stem to give it support so it can stand under its own weight.

Both the stem and head are filled with cotton to allow for a nice feel when held.

Bridal Bouquets: Finding the Perfect Balance of Beauty and Comfort

One issue with this project was how to make the stems of the flowers so they have good shape and the bride can hold them.

An easy solution would have been to use floral wire. It comes in many colors and can bend into any shape needed. The issue with wire is it will bend with pressure, the flower heads were too heavy and the wire could poke out and hurt the bride.

To solve the issue a dowel was used. It can support the weight of the flower heads, comfy to hold and is robust enough to keep its shape on the big day.

She Said Yes!

The bride gave the ok to the sample flower and gave the go ahead to make the bouquet.

It is important when working with clients that we get approval for everything from size and shape to color selection. With this project being for such a big day it was important to make a prototype to show the bride how it will look and to request changes as needed.

All that is left now is to make all the flowers for the final bouquet and arrange it. We even got the go ahead to make some flowers for the flower girl too!

Make sure to share with a friend and to follow Aurorawear to stay up to date on this and other projects!

An Arrangement That Will Last Forever

The most delicate accessories can be some of the most stunning accent pieces for those very special occasions and a bride’s bouquet is no different.

These small parts will make up an example piece that will allow the bride to see how a crocheted bouquet can bring warmth to her outfit and match other colors from her wedding.

This handcrafted piece will also create interest through intricate texture while still giving a soft feel that will last long after it is thrown.

Christmas has left my work table cluttered and the office full but fear not! More project updates will be coming in the New Year.
Also the client would like to take their corset in another direction and I am excited to make that dream a reality!

The History Of The Modern Bra

The creation of the modern bra is credited to two women, Mary Phelps Jacob and Herminie Cadolle.

Herminie Cadolle was a French corsetière who patented a garment called the Corselet Gorge in 1889. Designed to give support to the breasts without constricting the waist and is considered the first modern bra.

This design did not suit Mary Phelps, an American socialite who in 1914 patented a garment consisting of two handkerchiefs and ribbon.

This new design was made to be more comfortable than Herminie's Corselet Gorge.

These two designs came about because in the 19th and 20th centuries fashion was moving towards a more comfortable and revealing style and women were participating in activities that required more movement.

On top of those reasons new fabrics and elastics made the design and manufacture of bras both comfortable and supportive.

This is just a brief history of the bra and doesn't even cover Mary Phelps Jacob who has a long history of her own.
