• For people with diabetes: watch for numbness, ulcers, or drainage—these need prompt professional review. ⚠️

Prior to and following a medical pedicure. Permission granted for educational purposes to illustrate nails that have become overgrown. When nails reach this length, they can cause discomfort by digging into the skin, leading to deformation of not only the nail but also the foot and toe positioning.

Regrettably, it's common to encounter clients who have neglected to seek medical attention for their nail care until a family member has observed their feet. With the consent of both the client and their family, I share this experience to educate others on the importance of medical foot care. Recently, I met a client who had been unable to trim their nails for several years, believing that extraction, similar to a tooth, would be necessary due to the nail's deformation. Fortunately, I was able to trim and reduce the nail's size, restoring a healthier appearance. The client's family was overjoyed, and the client, overcome with emotion, had never thought it possible to achieve pain-free nail care. I urge you to examine your loved ones' feet and schedule an appointment if you notice thickened or deformed nails.

Long nails can cause discomfort in socks, shoes or in bed against sheets. This patient skin is very dry on the soles of their feet which required exfoliation. Very happy to have their first medical pedicure and they loved how nice her skin now feels and looks. Permission granted from client to post pictures for educating others about medical footcare

Corns are painful and today I helped my client experience relief with a medical pedicure. By removing the callous and corn, the patient was able to walk without pain-free after the treatment.

Assessment and Treatment of Acute and Chronic Foot Conditions
The Foot Care Nurse performs a detailed assessment of each client, examining the skin, structure, and nails of the feet, from the knee down to the toes. Employing knowledge, skill, and judgment, the nurse develops a treatment plan for acute and chronic symptoms, such as ingrown toenails and corns, and makes referrals to appropriate providers as needed.

What is an Advanced Foot Care Nurse?

Foot care nursing is an essential aspect of overall patient care. An Advanced Foot Care Nurse evaluates the holistic wellness of individuals, paying particular attention to foot health and utilizing sensory cues to inform nursing diagnoses. The nurse delivers treatments addressing any pathology of the skin and nails of the feet, with the objective of promoting foot health, maintaining lower extremities, and preventing complications. Providing education, serving as a community resource, and advocating for clients' overall health and well-being are fundamental to the Scope of Practice for a Foot Care Nurse. When a skill falls outside the scope of practice, the Foot Care Nurse will refer the client to the appropriate healthcare professional.
