A knitter and seamstress from a very young age, my love for textiles & design runs deep. As a teenager working in a fabric shop, my favourite memory was being tasked with unpacking the exquisite, imported materials from all over the world. Feeling the textures, admiring the colours and weave of the fabrics and yarns, this was my happy place. It was a natural progression to then start creating my o

wn designs. Although my passion for creating with my imagination and my hands never left me, life, as so often is the case, pulled me in many different directions. It was during a particularly stressful time that I found myself gravitating back to my innate creativity. Knitting by hand with beautiful yarns the first pair of mittens that would eventually evolve into Judith Lorraine Creative Studio. From that point forward I have been creating my mittens, spending much of my spare time searching out beautiful yarns and accents from around the world I look to nature for a lot of my creative inspiration and spend a great deal of my time on the shores of Lake Superior working on my designs. An added bonus has been the involvement of my elderly parents in my dream. In the early stages of my Mom’s journey through dementia she took great pleasure in knitting some of my cuffs for me. I will always cherish the time we spent together creating and choosing colour pallets. The textures and softness of the mitts continued to soothe her right to her final days. My Dad has proudly taken over the lining department. At the age of 94 he continues to cut out all of my fleece liners. It has been a great source of pride and purpose in his life.

I’m taking a step back from my creative knitting process for a bit. This morning’s walk reminded me that I need to take some time to “stop and smell the flowers”, quite literally.
So, I’m tucking my knitting bag out of sight until I can no longer resist it’s pull.
I wonder how long that will take?

These little beach flowers have sparked my imagination for the use of this beautiful superfine alpaca, merino wool mix.

The delicacy of this dainty bloom and the exquisite softness of the yarn both pull my mind to the peaceful beauty of one of those magnificent pink and purple sunsets over the lake. I can feel this one already!🥰

I found this beach cover-up pattern in an old 1986 Beehive knitting book.

With a few modifications; lengthening to mid thigh, dropping the rib edging and maybe a more open sideseam, I think I'm going to love it.

I've decided to use this lovely varigated lilac and white summer weight cotton/bamboo mix from Sugarbush.

What are your thoughts on this vintage knit? Will keep your updated throughout the process🧶

I find it so interesting how we all have certain colours that we gravitate towards. What is it that pulls us in?

recently posted an article about colour theory. She states: ""Colour has the power to communicate a very strong message on a sub-conscious level. Colour speaks its own language, one that transcends spoken and written word. There are so many layers to colour psychology. Each colour evokes certain emotions and energy within us, and informs a different message.""

Purple is my colour. It reminds me of my Mom, of the freshness of budding spring gardens, the beautiful fragrance of lilac tress and my favourite deep purple velvet dress I wore to my first prom.

What is that special colour that pulls at you?

It's taken a little longer than expected to finish this piece, but I'm so happy with the end result. It may need to be tucked away until the chill is back in the air, but the softness of this exquisite yarn is well worth the wait. These colours!! Misty, or moggy as my granddaughter says, mornings looking out over the lake with a warm cup of coffee and loving memories. 💙

"You've always had the power My Dear, you just had to learn it for yourself". -Glinda- Wizard of Oz

When I was a little girl the Wizard of Oz was one of the scariest movies I had ever watched. It's taken me 65 years to truly realize that the power to navigate my life comes from within. Maybe more importantly, that I have no power over the external events whirling around me but I have absolute power over how I find my way through them.

It is with this personal understanding that I wade into the next chapter of my life. As I get older I feel a huge need to explore my passions, my creativity and my long held dreams; to shed the restraints of ingrained beliefs and stereotypes so that I can be the person I want to be.

To every woman out there, to my daughters, daughter-in-law, granddaughters and niece, my fervent wish is for you to realize the power within you and to use that power to live your most authentic life, as the world swirls around you.

This thought stopped me in my tracks...

I rescued these buttercups before mowing them down along with the knee high grass outside my door. It occured to me while putting them in the vase that I rarely work with greens and yellows when I'm creating designs. They aren't my go to colours, but seeing them outside in their natural habitat and together indoors I've decided to give it a try. Combined with the winter white and slate shades of the beach pebbles I have some ideas percolating around fall and winterwear.

Where does this colour combination take you?

Life put a pause on my latest cami design. Now I’m back at it and anxious to watch it evolve. I’m really excited about the possibilities of the full length version 🤩
Unfortunately, I’ve been told that the Sugarbush yarns will no longer be available so this will be one of the last pieces I will do with this lovely cotton / bamboo mix. I’m keeping my eyes open for another cotton weight with similar texture and drape.
In the meantime, I still have a stash of this beautiful yarn in shades of lilac, so my mind will be conjuring up possibilities as I’m working away!
Stay tuned for an update on this one, I’ll be sure to share final product shots when ready ❤️

I'm just emerging from a few busy weeks and once again refocusing on my summer weight line.

I like to wind my skeins of yarn when I'm looking for a quiet task that requires little to no focus but allows me to interact with my beautiful stash of fibre.
For me the process plants the seeds of creative design.

Last week I introduced this incredible Juniper Moon Israeli Cotton in grey and blue. Today I'm leaning toward the softness of the pink and white.
It could be the blossoming rhododendrons and the sweet aroma of the lily of the valley in my garden that is influencing me ☺️

What is influencing your colour or design choice today/this week?

// Knitting Update 🧶

This Juniper Moon Cumulus Israeli mako cotton is heaven to work with! It is so soft and airy.

This weeks summer weight shawl is going to be in a soft grey and deep blue. I have a feeling once this is done I will have trouble giving it up!
Wearing it will be like wrapping myself in the palettes of Lake Superior and the touch of the northern breeze☁️
