This little artifact stayed hidden for 89 years. A recent find by Andrea Barry in a dresser she was refinishing. I am certainly happy that she sent this to me.
April 25, 1936
Roland Rodenhizer of Dayspring, bought a pair of gloves and another item for $.70
Paid in full
1936 was a big year for Herman Rofihe. He purchased the building and got married to my grandmother Mary. It’s also the year my father was born.
It was a good year, thank you to Andrea for a little reminder of our history.

A friend of mine sent me a message last night saying she found this bag in her mother‘s things. I picked it up this morning from her. We had these bags when I was in high school in the late 70s early 80s. Another friend texted this morning and he said happy 99th to Rofihe’s Mens Wear. It totally skipped my mind that it was on this day in 1926 that Herman officially started his business.
Thank you Anna Maughn and Robert Coleman. 
They were good years!

An interesting piece about jean sizing.  I recall when men’s sizing was very similar across all styles. It’s only when the stretchy jeans came in the fashion for men that the sizings went all out of whack. Levi’s, 501 and 505 were always the benchmark of the true size. 
When I first started working full-time in 1987 no man on the south shore of Nova Scotia would ever of thought about wearing a pair of stretchy jeans. We’ve come a long way baby!

CBC Marketplace looked at men’s and women’s jeans from some of Canada’s popular brands to see if the waist size that’s labelled matches up with the actual waist measurement. Only a couple did, and experts say this is likely by design to get consumers to buy the product.

So sad to share the passing of a long time employee. Bertha worked at our store for what seemed forever. She was a wonderful person and I enjoyed her humour and spirit. Bertha, thanks for everything.

A couple old ads found by Paul Harmon. Back in the day we sold general dry goods along with clothing. When Barry was a kid he remembers going with Herman to measure rooms for flooring we sold. Basically you did what you had to to run a business, somethings never change.

When I first started work , it was almost a daily event taking a parcel or suit bag to MacKenzie Bus for delivery, This pic of a suit bag was classic Barry Rofihe, address hand written on the bag with a phone number. I always was amazed the customer received his suit and in great shape!
Thanks to my sister’s friend for sending this memory.

Looks like we had a bit of snow that day. All the Rofihes were curlers and on this day we were welcoming them to town. Probably taken in the mid 50’s
