Excited for this coming up on Monday 🥰 This will be my second year attending.
Today, we're showcasing La Montagnaise Creations, an Innu / Montagnais artist!
Here's the artist's statement:
"Kuei! My name is Alexandra Amélia. I am born and raised on the traditional territory of the Niitsitapi in Mohkinstsis (Calgary), however my traditional lands (Nitassinan) are out East in the province of so-called Québec. I am a 31-year-old mixed Innu/Montagnais and French-Canadian artist and beader. I started beading in 2020 when I was involved with the Indigenous Student Council at the University of Calgary. Each bead is applied with purpose and medicine, inspired by the strong matriarchs of my family. I am a one-woman run and owned business which is named after my Nukum who was a proud Montagnaise ishkueu (woman). I resource most of my materials from Indigenous businesses, and much like my Nukum, I am proud to carry this artform with me and I hope they bring you as much medicine as they do for me. My creations are inspired by my roots and are meant to be worn and appreciated by all as every single creation is handmade with love, inclusivity and reciprocity. Enjoy!"
Visit La Montagnaise Creations at our Indigenous Heritage Market on July 1st!
