Fairly traded goods from Guatemala. A time when people relied on their manual skills and imagination to make things that they wore and used daily.

A HANDMADE ECONOMY AND CULTURAL SURVIVAL There are few cultures left in the world like the Mayan communities in Guatemala that still live by their hands. The cottage industries that flourish here in homes and small workshops include wax, metal, wood work and above all – weaving. My great attraction to the weaving traditions of Guatemala has been their beauty along with the cultural survival of the Mayan communities.
It is obvious that Guatemala is losing, bit by bit, some of their rich traditions in weaving. This is where I believe that designers, both local and foreign, who find new uses for vintage and new weavings, in bags, purses, even footwear, are helping the Mayan artisan communities retain their traditional skills.
I am an advocate of maintaining and discovering new markets for these products which will assist in the preservation of this rich Mayan culture.
