Another great first edition Canadian book. Pride's Fancy by Thomas H. Raddall was printed in 1946.
A story of Nova Scotia men and ships-but most of the action takes place on the high seas and the island of Haiti and San Domingo, newly seized by the blacks under the leadership of Toussaint L'Ouverture. Pride's Fancy is the name of a ship, built in Nova Scotia under the ownership of a hard and bitter man, Pride, and his foster son, teller of the tale. The ship was destined as a privateer, sailing against the enemies of the British,-Spaniards and French in the Caribbean islands. Destined, too, to return to Haiti to seek out buried treasure, a treasure which proved to be a false trail, laid to give reason for bringing the little French exiled planter back to his wife's grave to die. Adventure, romance, for those who like sea tales.

Vintage Hardcover Christmas Books: A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, The Haunted Man by Charles Dickens. This copy is in good condition with a red cover embossed with gold. Printed in 1913.

After the success attained with A Christmas Carol in 1843 Charles Dickens continued the series throughout the 1840s, maintaining what he called "the Carol philosophy" to "strike a sledgehammer blow" for the poor, uneducated, and repressed. In typical Dickens fashion he drove his message home with a mixture of humor and good cheer. Margaret Lane points out in her introduction to the Oxford Illustrated Dickens-Christmas Stories "when he had a pill to offer he confected it expertly with spice and sugar."
Although subsequent Christmas books sold well at the time of their initial release, they have not enjoyed the staying power of A Christmas Carol.
The Christmas books, particularly The Chimes, the Cricket, and the Carol, were the centerpiece of Dickens' public reading tours in the 1850s and 60s with A Christmas Carol far and away the most popular with audiences.
Dickens discontinued the Christmas books after The Haunted Man, devoting his "spare" time to the publication of weekly magazines, Household Words (1850-1858) and All the Year Round (1859-1867), in which he included annual Christmas stories. These Christmas stories, together with the Christmas books, forever linked Dickens with the celebration of Christmas.

Hardcover Swan Song by John Galsworthy in excellent condition. Could not find a copyright in it but does have handwritten name in it. Don't think it is a first edition which is reflected in the price.

The nine novels which make up The Forsyte Chronicles -- one of the most popular and enduring works of 20th century literature -- chronicle the ebbing social power of the commercial upper-middle class Forsyte family between 1886 and 1920. Galsworthy's masterly narrative examines not only their fortunes but also the wider developments within society, particularly the changing position of women. The author has drawn a fascinating and accurately detailed picture of the British propertied class.
Often incorrectly called The Forsyte Saga - the nine novel sequence properly known as The Forstye Chronicles contains three trilogies- of which the first trilogy is The Forsyte Saga (The Man of Property - In Chancery- To Let). The second trilogy- A Modern Comedy (The White Monkey- The Silver Spoon- Swan Song) is followed by the third and concluding trilogy- End of the Chapter (Maid in Waiting- Flowering Wilderness- One More River).
Michael Mont is succeeding in his public life in Parliament, but holds grave doubts about his private life and his wife, Fleur. Fleur's original love, Jon Forsyte, her cousin and the son of her father's ex-wife, returns to England where a meeting is inevitable. Fleur's undying love for Jon is disclosed. Other members of the Forsyte family are included in this imminently readable saga.

A post Civil-War story concerning the Tennessee Markward family, who, finding their way of life totally disturbed, go rapidly toward absolute decline. Disaster follows disaster until they come to their senses and vow to restore their former lofty position. A familiar and cliche plot which, nonetheless, moves along briskly and should appeal to those who liked the author's eight previous historicals.
This first edition print of After The Glory by Helen Topping Miller is in very good condition.

In December 1953 the French army occupying Vietnam challenged the elusive Vietnamese army to engage in a decisive battle. When French paratroopers landed in the jungle on the border between Vietnam and Laos, the Vietnamese quickly isolated the French force and confronted them at their jungle base in a small place called Dien Bien Phu. The hunters-the French army-had become the hunted, desperately defending their out-gunned base. The siege in the jungle wore on as defeat loomed for the French. Eventually the French were depleted, demoralized, and destroyed. As they withdrew, the country was ominously divided at U.S. insistence, creating the short-lived Republic of South Vietnam for which 55,000 Americans would die in the next twenty years.
