Humans were never meant to raise children alone. Alloparenting, which is care provided by grandparents, relatives, friends and other members of the community has been part of human child rearing for thousands of years.

The Grandmother Hypothesis asks us to consider something fascinating: could the support of older women have actually helped our ancestors’ children survive and thrive?

Maybe the village was never just a nice idea. Maybe it helped make us human. 👵❤️

For generations, women passed knowledge from mother to daughter, grandmother to granddaughter, and woman to woman. Then medicine stepped in and a lot of that lived experience was dismissed, interrupted, or simply lost.

It really does take a village. ❤️

What if menopause isn’t the end of our biological usefulness, but part of the reason humans have survived and thrived? 👵🔥

The Grandmother Hypothesis is an evolutionary theory suggesting that women may live long past their reproductive years because grandmothers played an important role in helping their children and grandchildren survive.

In other words… maybe evolution knew exactly what it was doing when it kept older women around. 😉

We’re digging into the science, the history, and what this theory says about the value of women as we age.

Does a wage equal value?

We tend to measure the value of work by the money attached to it. But what happens when some of the most essential work in our lives comes with no paycheque at all?

Planning meals. Remembering appointments. Managing schedules. Buying groceries. Caring for children and aging parents. Keeping track of birthdays, school forms, medications, laundry, household supplies, and a thousand other invisible tasks.

Women still disproportionately carry this unpaid labour. And because no one sends an invoice for it, it can become almost invisible.

Unpaid doesn’t mean unimportant.
Invisible doesn’t mean effortless.
And no wage does not mean no value.

How much would the mental load be worth if we actually had to pay someone to do it?

Feminism is not Misandry🐦‍⬛

Feminism and misandry are not the same thing. Calling out misogyny, sexism, or inequality isn’t about hating men, it’s about challenging systems and behaviours that harm women. Feminism isn’t women > men. It’s women = men. ❤️

Women don’t lack ambition, they often lack the freedom to pursue it earlier. When women are carrying more of the childcare, household management, emotional labour, and invisible mental load, there’s simply less time and energy left for public life. It’s no surprise that many women step into politics later, when caregiving demands begin to ease. Maybe the question isn’t “Why don’t women run sooner?” but “What are women carrying that makes running sooner so difficult?”
