We are very proud to introduce you to our “Every Child Matters” design 🧡 Orange Shirt Day is September 30th

I was honoured to create this special piece of art in collaboration with Savannah Norris Seigler, whose traditional name is Mulidzas, meaning stomach full of oolichan oil, comes from the Musgamagw people of Wakeman Sound, the Wei Wai of Cape Mudge, and the Lyackson Mustimuhw of Chemainus.

We were inspired to create this design with the intention of promoting awareness for Orange Shirt Day, by weaving together sacred Indigenous medicines, Cedar and Sweetgrass, with the Gardenia flower. In this design, the braided sweet grass heart represents coming back full circle from the loss of our Indigenous children and their innocence, and the generations affected since. As Braided sweetgrass represents the Generations before, those of today, and the Generations to come. The cedar, which is one of the most sacred medicines in Savannah’s culture often represents cleansing and healing, and is purposefully surrounding the gardenia flower, as the gardenia flower is representative of all our children.

During residential school times, it is no secret that Indigenous children and youth were robbed of many things, education being only one of them. To support our Indigenous youth choosing to further their education beyond high school, we have decided to donate 10% of the proceeds from our Orange shirts and donate them to the Micah Messent Memorial Fund. This memorial fund was made in the memory of Micah Messent, a young Indigenous man who passed away suddenly, shortly after receiving his degree from Vancouver Island University. Micah surely would have gone on to do amazing things in this world, and we look forward to supporting his passion for the education of Indigenous youth and the protection of the environment.

I took advantage of the cooler weather today and decided to work on engraving leatherette certificate holders. Not nearly as fun as bleaching garments out in the hot sun but I am always grateful to spend my days being creative.
