Today is extra special!!

Not only are Paul (my spouse) and I celebrating 10 years together, but today also marks 5 years since I started my page Sweetgrass & Ribbons!!!

What began at my kitchen table with a sewing machine, fabric, and a dream has grown into something I could never have fully imagined. From creating my first simple ribbon skirts to designing detailed story skirts that share teachings, memories, and culture through fabric, every stitch has been part of the journey.

Over the years, there have been countless late nights, challenges, lessons, and moments where I had to trust the process and keep going. I didn't give up, and I'm so grateful I didn't.

Today, I have my own sewing space, a growing business, and an exciting new chapter ahead as I begin a partnership that will eventually lead toward owning a fabric store in Milk River.

I'm looking forward to building a website, expanding access to Indigenous regalia supplies, and creating more opportunities for learning and creativity within our communities.

This venture is one that deserves to grow slowly and gently, with care and intention, and I am excited for what the future holds.

To everyone who has supported Sweetgrass & Ribbons from the very beginning, purchased a skirt, shared a post, encouraged me, trusted me with a commission, or simply followed along on this journey, thank you. Your support has meant more than you know!!

I can't wait to continue creating, teaching, and sharing the stories woven into every skirt.

Here are just a few of the many skirts I've created over the years. Looking back, it's been an incredible journey, and I believe the best is still yet to come.

Miigwetch from the bottom of my heart. ❤️🪶✨

NOT FOR SALE.

🌸🐦 Custom Ribbon Skirt for Summer Rose 🐦🌸

One of the things I love most about creating custom ribbon skirts is hearing the stories behind them.

The winner of my recent waffle draw chose not to have a skirt made for herself. Instead, she gifted her prize to her niece, and I thought that was such a beautiful and generous thing to do.

Her niece recently received her spirit name, Summer Rose, along with her spirit colours. This skirt was created to honour that special milestone.

The turquoise fabric reminds me of flowing waters, while the ribbons represent her spirit colours: wild rose pink, rusty brown, and a silvery white that reflects the way stones shimmer beneath the water when the sun shines on them. Her helper, a beautiful yellow bird, rests among the wild roses, watching over her journey.

Every ribbon skirt tells a story, and it is always an honour to help bring those stories to life through fabric, ribbon, and appliqué (all applique has been sewn on piece by piece with fabric-no iron on transfers).

Congratulations, Summer Rose. May you walk proudly in your spirit name and the gifts that come with it. 💗

Miigwetch to everyone who continues to support my work and trust me with these meaningful creations!!

Made with love!! These are the skirts I absolutely LOVE to create! Story skirts that are sacred!

✨ She Stands From Afar ✨

The fourth custom skirt from this commissioned 14-piece collection created for an organization in Ontario.
This skirt was created for a Bear Clan woman whose spirit name is She Stands From Afar. She Brings People to the Circle.

The bear appliqué represents her strength, her grounding, and her clan. Surrounding the bear are florals and circular elements that symbolize those who may stand quietly at a distance, but who are still deeply connected to the circle, the people, and the teachings.

I wanted this design to feel powerful but welcoming at the same time.
Strong, but soft.
Grounded, but full of life.

The seven ribbon colours woven throughout the skirt represent the organization this collection is being created for, while the fabric itself honestly became one of my favourite parts of this entire project. The colours, the movement, the stars, the florals… everything came together in such a beautiful way.

Every appliqué detail has been fully sewn on using fabric only. No iron-on transfers. Every stitch placed with care and intention.

I truly hope she loves this skirt when she sees it. ✨

Now it’s time to move into the remaining 10 matching ribbon skirts for the organization, along with the ribbon shirts I’m currently creating for this same project.

This commission has honestly been one of the most exciting and meaningful projects I’ve worked on.

I also want to thank everyone patiently waiting on side orders and messages while I complete this collection. Your patience and support truly mean so much to me. ❤️

✨ The Language Lives On ✨

Skirt Three of this commissioned 14-piece collection created for an organization in Ontario.

This skirt was created for a Wolf Clan woman who is also a language teacher, and I wanted this design to reflect the power of language, culture, and teachings being carried forward for the next generations.

The wolf stands beneath the moon, howling upward… but to me, those howls represent more than sound. They represent language being passed down. Stories being spoken. Teachings being remembered. Ancestors still being heard.
Our culture is important.
Our traditions are important.
But our language carries the spirit of who we are.
Without language, so much can be lost.

With language, our people continue to live through every generation.
This skirt was created using the seven ribbon colours of the organization, woven together with a fully sewn fabric appliqué design.

Every piece was stitched into place individually. No iron-on transfers. No shortcuts. Just fabric, thread, story, and intention.

I honestly love the colours in this one. The turquoise against the ribbon colours and the dark wolf silhouette feels so powerful together.
I truly hope she loves this skirt as much as I loved creating it. ✨

✨ Rainbow Warrior Woman ✨

Skirt Two of this commissioned 14-piece collection created for an organization in Ontario.

This skirt was created for a Turtle Clan woman whose spirit name is Rainbow Warrior Woman, and I wanted every part of this design to reflect strength, colour, spirit, and identity.

The turtle carries rainbow tones throughout the shell to represent her spirit name, while the seven ribbon colours woven into the skirt honour the organization this collection is being created for.

Every single section of this turtle was individually cut, placed, and fully sewn on using fabric appliqué. Piece by piece. Layer by layer. No printed designs. No shortcuts. Just time, patience, and story work stitched into every detail.

I honestly love how this turtle came to life.
The colours, the movement, the symbolism… it feels powerful.

This skirt is not for sale.
It is part of a commissioned collection currently being created.
