The Light She Carries Ribbon Skirt

I wanted to try something a little different with this ribbon skirt, and I really love how it turned out!

I came across this beautiful celestial fabric and knew I wanted to create something with stars. I chose navy blue, turquoise and white ribbons, all sewn with coordinating thread, and created a large star appliqué surrounded by four smaller stars.

I named this one “The Light She Carries.”

I think there are times in all our lives when we question where we're going, the decisions we've made or what lies ahead of us.

And sometimes we forget how far we've already come.

The large star represents the light we carry within ourselves, and the smaller stars represent the people, teachings and experiences that have helped us find our way.

I wanted this skirt to be a reminder that even when life gets difficult, that light is still there.

Sometimes we just need to remember it. ❤️

I really enjoyed making this one. It's different from my usual story skirts, and I love how the stars look against the celestial fabric.

Here's the finished ribbon skirt for October's subscriber giveaway! ❤️

I wanted to share what this month's lucky winner will be receiving!

I kept the design simple and went with this beautiful floral fabric and an ombré of blue ribbons. I think the colours look so pretty together!

I am sure the winner will enjoy wearing her new ribbon skirt! She absolutely loves it and gave me full creative freedom!❤️

When I'm not sewing or busy with my other work, I really enjoy spending time outside, gardening, having a fire and listening to some good old 80s music! ❤️

Give me some Daryl Hall & John Oates and a nice fire, and I'm happy! Haha! I find sitting around a fire so calming and grounding. Funny thing is, I listen to completely different music when I'm sewing than I do when I'm relaxing. I wonder if anyone else does that?

Anyway, this is my third harvest of herbs from my little wishing well garden! 🌿 This is my first summer here in Coutts, and I wasn't sure how well everything would grow. I've been growing herbs for years, but I have to say, they really took off here!

Oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage and spearmint! I also grew basil, chives and green onions. Not bad for such a little garden!

Now to dry everything and get my jars labelled. I love cooking with herbs, so these will definitely come in handy over the winter.

Introducing my Green Heartberry & Bear Medicine Ribbon Skirt! 💚

I absolutely LOVE how the green ombré ribbons flow together, and those red strawberries just POP against the black! I'm such a sucker for beautiful colour combinations, and this one definitely won me over!

A little update on my Heartberry & Bear Medicine skirts. I've had to stop taking orders for the pink version because I can no longer get the bear ribbon. But don't worry, if you've already placed an order with me, you're good! I have enough ribbon to finish all my current custom orders, and that's exactly what I'll be working on again today! 🥰

I still have bear ribbon available in green, blue, lavender and purple, so there are still some beautiful colour combinations to play with!

And before anyone asks, this particular skirt is NOT FOR SALE! 😂 This one's staying with me and the 2nd is off to the States!

Sometimes when you're creating for everyone else, you see something you love so much that you just have to make one for yourself too! Haha!

Heart Berry & Bear Medicine Ribbon Skirt 🐻🍓

She is finished and available!!

This skirt brings together two medicines that carry beautiful teachings: the heart berry and the bear.

In Anishinaabe teachings, the strawberry is often called the heart berry because of its shape and the teachings it carries around love, connection, family and our relationships with one another. Like the runners of a strawberry plant that reach outward and create new growth, we are reminded that we are connected and that the love and care we give can continue outward through our families and communities.

Bear medicine carries teachings of strength, courage, protection and healing. The bear also reminds us of the importance of medicines, knowing when to rest, when to heal and when to stand strong.

I wanted this skirt to bring those teachings together: a strong heart and the strength to protect it. ❤️
I created the strawberries using a beautiful tiny dotted red fabric that gives them texture and really makes them pop against the black. Each piece of the strawberry appliqué was cut from fabric, layered and carefully sewn into place.

The ribbon work moves from deep red through beautiful shades of pink, with the thread matched to each ribbon so the stitching blends into the colour.

The floral bear ribbon along the bottom brings the entire story together.

Sometimes a skirt begins with what has filled your heart. 🩷🍓🐻
I've been a little quiet here lately, but I'm finally back home and ready to get back to my sewing table.

I returned from an incredible trip to Ontario with my heart full from time spent with my family, making memories and reconnecting with the people I love. Almost immediately after coming home, I was asked to take on a short contract as a scribe with the Alberta First Nations Information Governance Centre.

For two days, I had the privilege of sitting, listening and working alongside Chiefs, board members and First Nations leaders from Treaties 6, 7 and 8. I listened to important conversations around First Nations research, data sovereignty, governance and the responsibility of protecting and carrying our own knowledge.

September 30 was especially powerful.

We gathered on Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and prayer was an important part of our time together. Sitting in that room, listening to our leaders, hearing the prayers and reflecting on everything that day carries stayed with me long after the meetings ended.

So this afternoon, I want to create. 🩷
I pulled out these beautiful shades of pink, laid them beside this floral bear ribbon, and immediately knew where I wanted this next skirt to go.

🍓 Heartberry and Bear Medicine 🐻
Black fabric. A beautiful pink ombré. Floral bear ribbon. And above the ribbons, I'm going to appliqué strawberries with bright green leaves and little strawberry blossoms trailing gently down into the colour.

The Heartberry carries teachings of the heart, love, connection and relationships in some nations. Bringing that together with the bear feels especially meaningful to me right now.

After being surrounded by family in Ontario, and then coming home and spending two days listening, observing and learning from First Nations leadership, this is simply what my hands and my heart want to make next.

That's one of the things I love most about creating these skirts.
The story doesn't always begin when I cut the fabric.
Sometimes the story has already been happening. ❤️

I can't wait to see this one come together and share the finished skirt with you.

Well, I’m home. ❤️

Ten days went by way too fast, but I packed a whole lot of living into them.

I got to spend time with my mom and stepdad, my brothers, my sons and grandsons, my aunts and uncles. We had a couple of big old fish fries, a beautiful meal together, bonfires, time at the beach and lots and lots of laughs.

My son set up a projector one night and we had our own little dance party to all the old songs. 😂 It reminded me of the old MuchMusic dance parties. We danced, laughed and had an absolute blast. I also got out for a four-wheeler ride with my son, which I loved.

Just good, simple family time.

I also forgot how beautiful Northern Ontario is this time of year. The leaves were starting to change and everywhere I looked there were reds, oranges, yellows and golds. 🍂 Living in Coutts, Alberta, I don’t get to see fall like that anymore, so I really appreciated it. I found myself just looking at the trees and taking it all in.

I think I needed these ten days more than I realized.

I didn’t sew while I was away. I just spent time with my family, made some memories and gave myself a little break.

And now I’m home feeling refreshed and, most importantly, inspired again.

I already have a couple of new designs in mind that I’ll be working on and sharing over the next week or so. I’m actually really excited to see them come together.

Thank you to everyone who waited for me and was patient while I took this time away. I appreciate it more than you know. ❤️

It feels good to be home.

And I think I brought a little bit of Northern Ontario inspiration back to Alberta with me. 🍂🪡

The Ones Who Walk Together 🐺🌲

I absolutely love how this one came together. ❤️

When I found this beautiful watercolour wolf panel, I knew I wanted to pull the colours right out of the forest. The deep greens, soft greys, golds and browns all came from the trees, rocks and wolves in the scene. I finished it with copper rickrack around the panel and along the bottom, and I think that little bit of copper just brought everything together!

Wolves have always fascinated me because of the way they live. They form strong bonds, care for their young and rely on their pack. There is something beautiful about knowing you don't have to walk through this life alone.

The wolf also carries the Grandfather Teaching of Humility. A reminder that although we each have our own strength and our own place in this world, we are also part of something much bigger than ourselves. Our families, our communities, the land and all of Creation.

And I think that's what I love most about these two wolves. They're simply standing there together, surrounded by the forest.
