[Minister’s name]! My name is [Your Name] and I am a Canadian voter. I am calling you to demand that the Canadian government voice its support for South Africa’s application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to protect Palestinians from the genocidal actions of Israel.
The Canadian government must also support South Africa’s request for urgent measures from the ICJ to end Israel’s military operations in and against Gaza, which would provide immediate relief for the people in Gaza.
As of today, more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel in Gaza including 9000 children. Israel has withheld water, food, fuel, and electricity from Gazans putting an entire population at serious risk of mass deaths from famine, dehydration, and disease. This toll has only continued to rise – not only daily, but hourly – since the filing of the case. Therefore, I applaud South Africa’s intervention at the ICJ, which I, as a Canadian resident, believe deserves Canada’s full support.
The Canadian government must uphold its call for a ceasefire. If Canada is serious about bringing a sustainable end to the violence, and if it is to remain consistent with its own legal position articulated in The Gambia v. Myanmar, Canada must put its full weight behind South Africa’s application to the ICJ.
I am calling for you to demand that Canada make a formal submission to the ICJ indicating its support for the South African application against Israel. Canada’s submission should emphasize and demonstrate that it is aware of its responsibilities under the Genocide Convention to take all steps to prevent genocide. I am also calling for you to demand that the Canadian government issue a public statement in support of the South African application against Israel.
Additionally, Canada must abstain from taking any action to oppose or undermine South Africa’s efforts to seek redress for the genocide unfolding in Gaza.
This issue is important enough to my community to sway our votes - if you, [MP’s name], stay on the wrong side of this issue and do not represent us, we will actively campaign against you, [MP’s name ]and vote you out.
