Indigenous Empowerment Fashion Collective

05/08/2026

A special moment captured from Edmonton Indigenous Fashion Week, a gathering rooted in culture, community, creativity, and Indigenous excellence.

This extended feature shares reflections from the people behind and in front of the movement, speaking on the importance of Indigenous fashion, representation, and creating space for Indigenous voices within the industry.

From the models backstage to the designers, volunteers, creatives, photographers, production teams, Elders, youth, and every single person who showed up in support, this week was built by community.

Edmonton Indigenous Fashion Week was never just about fashion. It was about reclaiming space, uplifting Indigenous voices, creating opportunities for the next generation, and showing our people that we belong in every room, every runway, and every stage while remaining grounded in who we are.

To everyone who attended, supported, shared, created, walked, organized, and believed in this vision, thank you for being part of something bigger than ourselves on Treaty 6 Territory.

Fashion is our storytelling. Fashion is our identity. Fashion is our resilience.

DAY 1: NETWORKING NIGHT & MANNEQUIN MODELLING

Day 1. And what a beginning.

Watching this vision come to life through our networking space and mannequin modelling was something iefashioncollective will never forget.

Every conversation, every connection, every moment of stillness and expression reminded me why this was created.

Edmonton Indigenous Fashion Week is more than an event to IEFC . It is a space for our people to shine, our stories to be heard, and our creatives to be seen, recognized, and celebrated on our own terms.

To everyone who showed up, supported, and shared their energy. Thank you for trusting this vision.

We’re just getting started.

DESIGNER HIGHLIGHT:

A powerful intergenerational collaboration between Helen Oro and Okimaw Bird—a collection rooted in
love, legacy, and sustainability.

At just 13 years old, Okimaw Bird’s passion for fashion is a tribute to his late mother, Kehiew Iskwew,
honouring her spirit through thoughtful design and storytelling.

His journey began alongside his Aunty,

Helen Oro, with his very first dress featured in an online Vogue article. That moment inspired a collection
dedicated to memory, resilience, and care for the land—crafted using repurposed materials sourced from
thrift stores to reduce fashion waste.

Helen Oro, designer and owner of Helen Oro Designs and a member of Pelican Lake First Nation, is an
internationally recognized designer whose work has been showcased across Canada, the U.S., and
internationally.

Beyond the runway, Helen is committed to mentorship, education, and creating meaningful
opportunities for emerging creatives.

Together, their work is more than fashion—it’s a story of love passed between generations.
