In 1870, a Scottish immigrant arrived at Fort Edmonton on Christmas Eve with nothing but skill.
John Walter built the city's first ferry, rowing settlers, horses and buggies across the North Saskatchewan River— free if you were going to church. 🙏🏼
The community that grew around him was called Walterdale — Walter's Valley ( dale is Scottish for valley).
A bridge now stands where his ferry once crossed. They named it after him.
