Kay's Kreation

Kay's Kreation Kay's Kreation is a seasonal business running from May to September. Starting May 2016 as a venture in digitally aided custom dress patterns made for you

I used to do manual custom dress pattern drafting. I enjoyed it but was no longer finding time to do it with the heavy demands of my bookkeeping and tax business. I decided to try combining the pattern drafting with this digital age and see if I can get back into pattern making. It is a new venture and so I will need you patience as I iron out the wrinkles this first season. I plan to run it as a

seasonal business from May to September when my bookkeeping business is slower. Here's to happy sewing!

While Kay's Kreation is not officially open these winter months, I would like to share a sewing tip or two Iearned from my niece who works at Fabricland.... You know with stretch fabrics being all the rage these days there is sewing techniques needed to make stretch garments neat and have a desired end result.
So if your sewing machine has the capabilities to use a twin needle that is one great tip for sewing stretch fabrics to give seams more stability and also creates a nice top stitch finish. The zigzag on the back side still allows the seam to stretch without straining the seam.
And here is tip #2; to get your neckline to lay nicely, get some Clear soft 1/4 inch elastic and lay it on seam allowance when sewing neckline seam. Do not stretch the elastic other than to gently contour to curves. This should help your neckline on your stretch garments to stabilize without losing its stretch. And so help to keep the neckline from gaping or stand away.
Happy Sewing....

This is my latest sewing gadget! I recommend it to all seamstresses who have the bobbin rat nest problem.

Seems stretch knits are the new go to fabric. Having the appropriate sewing machine needles will save on frustration when sewing. Use a ballpoint or stretch type.
Also if the fabric is quite stretchy and has some weight to it remember that you'll need to adjust your pattern to accommodate that. {I once had a piece that was so stretchy and heavy I needed to shorten the skirt by 4 inches and the bodice by about 1.5 inches! that's quite major! }

We are now entering our "Tax Season" in our other business, Asset Bookkeeping. So technically "Kay's Kreations" is in dormant mode until May! I realize that this is in direct conflict for those seamstresses out there that are now gearing up to do their "spring sewing" but its the story of my life. So Long....see you in the spring!

Did you know that lowering the presser foot on your sewing machine engages the tension as well?. If you are having trouble with loopy seams or too tight and puckering ones, you may be having tension issues.(Pun intended) To test the machine tension you can lower your presser foot and tug gently on the needle thread to see if the tension is too tight or too loose. The thread should be tight but still pull. If it pulls too easily the machine may be threaded wrong and the thread may not have wrapped around the tension dial correctly. Or you may have missed 1 step in the threading process. Who needs tension issues when trying to wrap up holiday sewing???

Dos and Don'ts when you get a new pattern...
1. Use an inexpensive piece of fabric for your first try - maybe something you found in the bargain bin ..but read #2
2. Do not use stretchy material - this will result in a misleading fit
3. Compare it to your previous pattern and it should not be drastically different. The changes should not be "inches" unless your previous pattern was very faulty.
4. If it is a Kays Kreation pattern...remember a computer drew the pattern from measurements but the computer can not perfectly clone you and so there still may be a few changes needed.
5. Make sure you sew the seams as deeply as marked on the pattern.
6. If the pattern fits tell others, if it doesn't tell me!

Sewing Darts ....this can be a challenge for the new or intrepid seamstress. If you don't get a nice gradual taper to them your garment will have strange and unbecoming puckers or shape. Always begin at the widest end of the dart and angle toward the point of the dart in a straight seam. If it helps you draw in the dart and sew along pencil mark. The last 1/4" of the dart should just so be catching the fabric.

Getting your summer sewing projects done? Me neither!

Sewing Tip for June: do your favorite patterns get all tattered in the corners where you've been pinning them to the fabric? Use banquet table plastic to make patterns. I find the plastic has a slight static to it that actually helps to hold the patterns to the fabric and invest in pattern weights or just use table knives to hold patterns in place.
