Hey friends! We made these these scunchies to help raise money for our friends in g a z a . $20= $5 to mail it to you and $15 goes to Dooa, Ahmad and Mohammed and their family. I video chatted with them yesterday, it was an absolutely gorgeous day in pales Tina. The sun, the colours, their beautiful faces. I met the dad, he knew enough english to tell me how hungry he is and to thank us for helping. I looked into their grandma's eyes, eyes that first opened the year of the Nak ba: 1948. She lays on a couch, all the time. She needs diapers. There is no sanitation. There are bombs.

Hello! Anyone from Calgary, Alberta? I hope this is okay here, I’m hoping to connect with folx in the Calgary sewing community. ✂️🧵🪡

I’m looking for help collecting a working sewing machine, bobbins, rotary cutter, ruler, mat, sewing scissors, and other notions and fabric for a woman that is currently staying at a women’s shelter in Calgary. She’s a new comer to Canada and is going through a difficult time right now and one small way we can help our new friend is to help her learn to sew.

We’re gifting her our virtual 6 week learn to sew course but we’re in Quebec and hoping to find others that can contribute. We have family in Calgary that can pick up and deliver the items to her!

Please let us know if you have anything to share! I’m including our supplies lists below so you have an idea of what we’re looking for. A gift card for a sewing store in Calgary also works!

I took some cuuute photos of Marja in her favourite jeans and the square neck top by that she recently made, and I had to share!

Wearing your clothing longer, and proudly wearing visible mending is Craftivism. And that is important!
Over the years Marja has made these jeans more and more her faves by caring for them. She patched holes, added embroidery because it makes her happy, mended and reinforced worn areas, covered stains with patches, made them bigger by adding side stripes, replaced buttons and elongated the waist going from low to high rise.

It’s so much more beautiful to me than any fashion trend, and it happens both organically but with intention. This is just such a great space in which to play with textiles in a creative and meaningful way. I think the tlc you put into them helps you become more attached and conscientious. Your clothes can start to tell a story as they evolve over time with you. You might think about the people who originally made your clothes and find yourself more aware and unable to ignore the cost of fast fashion on human lives and the environment. Our collective lack of awareness comes easy as it has to be that way to keep the cycle going and lining the pockets of a few.

We offer virtual mending and alterations classes because these are skills that we truly value and want to share with others. So wether you take one of our classes or not, we hope that you will help put an end to fast fashion by trying to keep your favourite clothing around as long as possible and also telling people about it. Learning the skills needed to care for and hang on to what you already have in your closet should be important and valued. And when you do buy textiles buy second hand and alter/mend/repair so they are just right for you.
