Today we honour and celebrate the life of an extraordinary man whose impact on Hamilton continues to be felt long after his passing.
Born and raised in Hamilton, Bernie Sherman was more than a businessman—he was a community builder, mentor, friend, and true ambassador for our city.
For decades, Jerry’s Man Shop was more than a clothing store. It was a gathering place where Bernie welcomed everyone with his signature greeting:
“Hi’ya! How ya’ doin’?”
It was never just a hello. It was an invitation to connect. By the time you left, you felt like family.
✨ Bernie never met a stranger. His warmth, humour, generosity, and genuine interest in people made everyone feel valued, respected, and seen.
Alongside his brother Gerald, Bernie helped shape Hamilton’s cultural landscape as co-owner of the legendary Downstairs Club, Hamilton’s first after-hours jazz venue—a place where music, community, and unforgettable memories came together.
🎭 A passionate supporter of the arts, Bernie proudly served as custom tailor for Theatre Aquarius, dressing countless performers and helping bring productions to life.
🏈 A devoted Hamilton Tiger-Cats fan, he dressed players, business leaders, entertainers, and distinguished gentlemen from Hamilton and beyond—always with impeccable style, professionalism, and care.
🎖 Bernie was equally dedicated to community service, serving as President of the Sertoma Club and supporting countless charitable initiatives throughout his lifetime.
Above all, Bernie believed in people. He believed in relationships, integrity, hard work, and giving back. Those values became the foundation of both his business and his family, creating a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
Today, we remember a beloved father, grandfather, uncle, mentor, entrepreneur, and friend.
Hamilton was fortunate to call him one of its own.
