🎶✨ A PIECE OF HAMILTON HISTORY… ✨🎶

Long before James North became the vibrant arts district we know today, there was a legendary place beneath the city streets where music, culture, creativity, and connection came alive…

🎷 The Downstairs Club.
📍 41 King Street West at MacNab
🖤 Hamilton, Ontario

This rare piece of history from November 1962 features none other than legendary Canadian icon Gordon Lightfoot performing at The Downstairs Club in the early days of his extraordinary career.

For many in Hamilton, The Downstairs Club was more than a venue…
It was an experience.
A gathering place.
A heartbeat of the city after dark.

Into the early morning hours, some of the finest musicians performed there—filling the room with jazz, folk, storytelling, laughter, and soul.

The Sherman family legacy has always been deeply woven into the cultural fabric of Hamilton—not only through fashion and community connection with Jerry’s Man Shop and Anshel’s… but through creating spaces where people gathered, celebrated, and felt inspired.

These memories remind us that true style is never just about clothing…
It’s about culture.
It’s about people.
It’s about community.
It’s about legacy.

To our cherished customers, family, and friends—
thank you for being part of this remarkable story that spans generations. 💛

Here’s to the music…
the memories…
the late nights…
and the magic of old Hamilton.

Do you remember The Downstairs Club, Bernie and Jerry Sherman or nights in downtown Hamilton’s golden music era? We’d love to hear your stories below. 🎶✨

🍀✨ ST. PATRICK’S DAY 1982 — THE DAY A DREAM CAME TO LIFE ✨🍀

At just 23 years old, I stepped into one of the most exciting chapters of my life…
💫 Becoming an entrepreneur
💫 Honouring family legacy
💫 Bringing new vision to a historic space

On James Street North in Hamilton, my husband, Mitch Sherman and I proudly opened ANSHEL’S — a boutique for women & men, named in honour of his grandfather. ❤️

But this wasn’t just any storefront…

This was the original SHERMAN CLOTHING (est. 1916) — a space rich in history, style, and community impact… and part of almost 100 years of Sherman family legacy in Hamilton.

And we had the incredible opportunity to breathe new life into it.

✨ We curated and sold original vintage inventory
✨ Transformed the space into contemporary designer fashion
✨ Created an experience — not just a store

And OPENING DAY?
🎭 A full fashion show
🎶 A live appearance by THE SPOONS — a Juno-nominated band who made a profound impact on the Canadian music scene (meeting customers and signing albums!)
💥 Energy, excitement, and a line out the door

It was pure magic.

For over a decade, ANSHEL’S became a hub of fashion, creativity, and connection — where style met story and community came alive.

And all of this was happening while I continued living my artist life…

🎬 Working as an actor in television, film, infomercials, and theatre
🎭 Teaching and inspiring others as a creative artist

Because I’ve always believed… you don’t have to choose just one path.

But even deeper than that…

💫 The Sherman family legacy has always been about more than business.
They were true trailblazers in fashion AND music in Hamilton:

👔 Jerry’s Man Shop — where some of the most distinguished men shopped
🎶 The Downstairs Club (After Hours) — where Mitch’s father Bernie and Uncle Jerry helped shape the local music scene as well as many artists all over Canada and the US

This is what entrepreneurship really is:
➡️ Honouring where you come from
➡️ Taking bold creative risks
➡️ Building something that impacts your community
➡️ Living ALL of your passions — fully and unapologetically

✨ Creativity has no limits.
✨ Anything is possible when you dream it — and take action to make it happen.

🍀 What dream are YOU ready to take action on? Share below — I’d love to cheer you on! 👇

✨Throwback Thursday | Fierce Fashion, Big Dreams & Rock ‘n’ Roll Vibes✨

Time warp to the 1980s — when big hair, bold denim, and even bolder dreams ruled the scene!

📍Here I am (yes, that’s me on the horse and Mitch in the cowboy hat!) modeling our new European Designer Denim Collection, captured in this unforgettable editorial by the talented David Gruggen.

My husband Mitch and I were the proud owners of Anshel’s Boutique for Women and Men, lighting up James Street North as young entrepreneurs.

We opened our doors in 1983 — and what an opening it was! 🎉 The iconic Canadian band The Spoons were in the store, signing autographs and working the floor. People were lined up for blocks to get in! Pure magic.

Next door, we were proudly connected with Mitch’s dad Bernie and uncle Jerry of the legendary Jerry’s Man Shop, creating a fashion-forward family hub that rocked the city with trendsetting style and community energy.

We championed Canadian designers, introduced bold European lines, and poured our hearts into every detail. Those were truly epic days — filled with passion, creativity, and a whole lot of style.

💫 Happy Heavenly Birthday, Bernie Sherman 💫
Our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
Born and raised in Hamilton.
A community builder. A trailblazer. A legend whose legacy lives on in every heart he touched.

If you ever walked into Jerry’s Man Shop, you were greeted with his signature:
“Hi ’ya! How ya’ doin’!”
It wasn’t just a hello — it was an invitation to connect. And by the time you left, you weren’t just a customer — you were family.

✨ Bernie never met a stranger.
His warmth, humour, and big-hearted charm made everyone feel welcome. Whether you spent five minutes or fifty with him, you walked away feeling valued and uplifted.

🕺 Alongside his brother Gerald, Bernie co-owned Hamilton’s iconic first after-hours jazz venue — The Downstairs Club — a legendary hotspot that brought music, culture, and community together in unforgettable ways.

🎭 He was the custom tailor for Theatre Aquarius, proudly supporting the performing arts by dressing countless actors with style and flair.

🏈 A devoted Hamilton Tiger-Cats fan, Bernie dressed many players, along with some of the most distinguished men and celebrities across Hamilton and North America — always with taste, excellence, and genuine care.

🎖 He was also deeply committed to giving back — serving as President of the Sertoma Club, leading countless community initiatives with humility and heart.

💼 A proud Hamilton entrepreneur, Bernie brought passion, integrity, and personal connection to everything he did — and he passed those values down through generations.

He paid forward these same work ethics, love for fashion, sense of service, and devotion to community to his family, leaving a profound legacy that continues to inspire everyone who knew him.

💛 Today, we honour him — the father, grandfather, uncle, mentor, and friend who made this city a better place simply by being in it.

Please share your favourite memory of Bernie below. Let’s keep his spirit alive through stories, laughter, and love.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Bernie Sherman.

Picture taken in 2005 of father and son; Bernie and Mitchel Sherman! Suiting Hamilton for almost 90 years and three generations, the Sherman family owned and operated this corner of James and Cannon, making it a destination location for fashion for both men and women.

Some of the most distinguished clients of Hamilton and the area looked to Jerry’s, Jerry’s Cellar and Anshel’s for their wardrobe needs and the latest trends.
