This is why companies like us exist, here to help ease the fabric waste.

Raw. Disturbing. Impossible to unsee.
At first, it resembles like fashion but look closer, and you see the mountain of discarded clothes behind it. It serves as a reminder of how easily we buy items, enjoy them for a season, and then let them go, often without considering where they ultimately end up.

I’ve also heard the stories about how some of these clothes are made. The truth isn’t always clear, but even the possibility forces us to pause. The reality is, cheap fashion isn’t really cheap; someone, somewhere, is paying the price.

It makes me wonder how different things might look if we slowed down, appreciated what we already own, and made more intentional choices. Not out of guilt, but out of care; for ourselves, the people making these clothes, & the world that bears the burden of what we leave behind.

🇺🇸 “During a 1968 interview with , a young rising New York designer named Scott Barrie (January 16, 1946 - June 8, 1993) predicted that he’d make it big on Seventh Avenue in five years. He made it in four.

Scott came to define a ‘70s aesthetic that has largely been credited to his peers such as . Yet he was considered a master of draping, reflecting his fascination with the bias cut dresses of 1930s couturiers such as and . The result was inventively cut and draped jersey and chiffon dresses the flowed and flattered the body.

Scott wanted to be a designer by the age of 10, and learnt by watching his grandmother on the sewing machine, a dressmaker who created gowns for noted jazz singers such as and . His mother initially discouraged him from pursuing a career in fashion, warning him that few black designers made it on 7th Avenue. He would quickly prove her wrong.

After briefly studying at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art, Scott came to New York in 1962 to enroll at the Mayer School of Fashion. He worked as a freelancer, served as a design assistant to and produced sketches for . During that time he also began cutting and sewing jersey dresses in his apartment. When and bought some of his designs, he was able to open a showroom in 1968.

Yet despite his success as a designer and contributions to the fashion industry, Scott would lose his backer’s support in 1980. During that time he also continued to face structural racism within the industry. In an interview with André Leon Talley, he noted that black designers “are always fighting against the system.”

By 1982, Scott moved to Milan, where he designed for and the Japanese firm Kinshido, which sold his designs in their Milan D’Or boutiques in Japan and New York.

He passed away in Italy from brain cancer in 1993.” 📖 by
