If you train, you already know the problem. The jacket fits your chest and pulls across the back. Or it fits your shoulders and hangs like a tent everywhere else.

It isn't you. Off-the-rack suits are scaled from a chart that assumes a 44-inch chest comes with a 38-inch waist. Yours doesn't.

A suit built from your 21 measurements starts from your actual body, not an average.

If you're weighing a made-to-measure chain against a local studio, the difference isn't the suit. It's how it's made and what happens after.

A chain runs on volume, booked slots, and commission. A local studio runs on one appointment at a time, no commission, and a permanent measurement file that makes every order after the first more precise.

Same idea. Different relationship.

A maroon, dark red or even plum blazer or sport coat is perfect for many situations.

It is the focal point of the outfit and after grey and blue, could be a solid 3rd choice in your wardrobe.

It pairs well with a lot of colours, but the goal would be to keep everything else in your outfit neutral or muted to allow the jacket to pop.

Add in pastels like light blue or a subtle patterned shirt with a white base to compliment the look. A light tan, navy or even grey would work for the pants.

If you love this look or want to expand your wardrobe beyond grey, blue and black, book an appointment with me. We will find you something that works for your style.

Today, I had a client ask if a textured suit would be too casual.

We were choosing between two light brown options.

Here is the answer I gave them:

- The less texture, the more versatile it is.

- If it is subtle and heavy, most people won't notice it has a texture until they get closer to you. It adds depth to the look and almost gives it two looks. Subtle from afar, detailed up close.

- If it is a very pronounced texture that is visible from afar, it becomes less versatile and should be the choice as your 4th or 5th suit after you have the essentials like navy, charcoal, and mid-grey.

It all comes down to our style profile, where we ask these questions:
- What suits do you already own?
- How do you feel about wearing colour?
- What situations, settings or events will you be wearing this outfit?

From there, we can decide where along the spectrum you should land when it comes to colour and texture.

Most men build every navy outfit out of white, grey, and blue. It works. It's also where most men stop.

Navy takes colour better than any other suit. A few that work for almost anyone:

Burgundy. A tie or pocket square in burgundy reads sharp and confident without trying hard.

Forest green. Quieter than it sounds. Pairs with navy better than most men expect.

Brown. Not a shirt, but brown shoes, a belt, or a watch strap warm up the whole outfit.

Pink works too, but it isn't for everyone. The three above are.

Start with your navy suit and add one colour at a time. Figuring out which ones actually work for you is part of what the appointment is for.

Fit changes everything. A $3,000 suit that doesn't fit, looks worse than a lower quality suit that does. Most men's wardrobes have pieces that are close but not right.

If most men's wardrobes have a weak point, it's usually the trousers.

Not the suit. The suit gets the attention. It's the trousers they reach for the other four days of the week that tend to be missing pieces.

The three every wardrobe needs before anything else:

Dark dress trousers in navy or charcoal. These anchor the formal side and pair with most jackets.

Mid-grey trousers. More versatile than they get credit for, and they work across seasons.

Tan or camel chinos. The most-reached-for piece once a man owns a good pair.

If you're missing one of those, or have five of one and none of the others, that's what we sort out at the appointment.

If you have broader shoulders, a muscular chest, or developed thighs, you've probably made peace with the idea that dress clothes just don't fit particularly well.

It's not you. It's the pattern.

Off-the-rack suits are cut around standard proportions designed to fit as many people as possible. Athletic builds fall outside that range in multiple places at once, which is why alterations only go so far.

Custom made-to-measure starts from your measurements, all 21 of them. The jacket fits your shoulders and your waist. The trousers fit your thighs and your seat.

One of the most common questions we hear from grooms: navy or charcoal?

Both are the right answer in different contexts. Here's how to think about it.

Navy is the more versatile of the two. It photographs well in almost any lighting, works for outdoor and indoor venues, and suits any season. If you want a suit you will genuinely keep wearing for the next decade, navy is almost always the starting point.

Charcoal reads as more traditionally formal. It's a better fit for evening ceremonies, city venues, or weddings with a dress code closer to black tie. It carries a different presence in a room.

If you're still deciding, that's what the appointment is for. We look at the venue, the dress code, the time of day, and your complexion, and work through it together.
