A customer brought me a 50s-inspired dress to hem. There was enough fabric off the bottom, I made a headband to match.

Oh, the yellow bridesmaid dress. I had never done pleats before...no joke. So, in hemming this dress, I learned there is such a thing as a tailor's clapper. They are made of birch wood and help keep with pressing the creases. I now also have a new tool. Who knew 91 pleats (or 182 creases) could take so long to oron back in? 🤣 This poor client paid mostly for my time spent at the ironing board. We did add a custom scarf though, which she loved.

Well, it's been a busy summer. I had a number of wedding attire pieces to work on. Two bridesmaids dresses (one pictured here which has it's own story to tell), a grandmother of the bride dress to work on, and the grandfather of the bride's trousers as well. I am currently working on a wedding dress. We are replacing the zipper in the back with a corset piece. I also had a challenge with a custom piece. A customer had a beautiful piece of fabric that had been purchased years before. She wanted a sun dress and choose the pattern. Trick was, the fabric was not wide enough, nor long enough, lol. In the end she was quite happy, but asked me to not show her face so her sweet smile is covered. 🤷‍♀️ I'll post the video of the yellow dress later.

May not be true, but a story of hope none the less.

Lowell, Massachusetts, 1919. In a textile mill known for its deafening looms and relentless quotas, a seamstress named Alma stitched more than uniforms. She stitched messages.

Using thread just a shade off regulation color, Alma embroidered tiny symbols into the linings—dots, dashes, and curls that mimicked Morse code. Each uniform carried a phrase: “Still here,” “We remember,” “You are not alone.”

She learned the code from her brother, a telegraph operator who vanished during a labor strike. Alma never spoke of him, but every stitch was a whisper in his name.

Mill supervisors never noticed. But soldiers who wore the uniforms began writing back—letters addressed to “The Needle,” thanking her for the words they couldn’t say aloud.

Years later, when the mill closed, Alma’s sewing machine was found with a final message etched into its base: “Truth travels in thread.”
