In two weeks.
6 Canadian first responders have been lost forever. Six families are quietly grieving, because publicly grieving these deaths is still stigmatized. Stigmitized because of the correlation to mental health.
To the families: the first responder community supports you. We grieve with you. We feel the loss. And many of us feel the weight of that loss just as deeply as we would a death in the line of duty.
Their service mattered. Their lives mattered. And how we lost them matters. Saying the words matter.
The only way we remove the stigma is by talking about it.
It will never be an easy conversation. The loss is heavy. The subject is uncomfortable. But silence has not saved us.
We need to change.
We need to start serving and saving each other with the same determination that first responders have spent their lives serving and saving everyone else.
And that starts with being willing to talk openly about what is happening.
To Vancouver Police and Surrey Police, where this officer served for more than 30 years, I am so sorry for your loss.
To their family, friends, colleagues, and everyone carrying the weight of this loss: we see you, we grieve with you, and we will not look away.
