My last post about community school for 2026. It is always a bittersweet time for me.
This time of year starts to get very busy for us at home, our business is seasonal and things are ramping up.
There isn’t much time for sewing or preparing kits and I quickly get worn out.
The flip side is that I really love the community in community school. I love this group of beautiful souls that gather once a week to sew with me. The drive to sewing with my neighbours, the visits with everyone as I walk around the room, how people bring in their sewing projects from home to show the class. I love seeing the confidence and skill level grow as our sewing class progresses.
Thank you to all of you for the very lovely barn quilt. You really surprised me and made me feel very appreciated with this gift. A special thank you to Charlene for being my classroom sidekick. You made this task way easier and I am grateful for your consistent support and presence each week.
I appreciate all of you showing up to class, the keen participation and most of all the friendship. We are lucky to have this community 💜

The end is near sewing friends. Our last class for community school 2026 is Monday April 13.
We will be sewing a very simple and useful project. A lined drawstring bag. Kits are free as a gift for being fantastic students this winter. This project is very easy and will permit us time to visit and enjoy our last evening sewing together.
As always we will share a few snacks and treats for our final class. Please bring something small to share, nothing too fancy.
See you all soon

We had a fantastic apron class tonight. So many great ideas shared amongst friends and pretty aprons produced.
Thank you to everyone that joined for the 2 weeks to learn this fun pattern.
We have one more week to go for community school.
I will post about our final class soon. No preparation is needed for our sewing project next week.
See you all then 💜

Our second class to sew the apron together is tonight
We do need to have our sewing machines tonight, thread that matches your apron colour and any trims or extras you want to add to your apron
See everyone at 7

I wanted to share this because it shocks me how many people do not know.
Microfiber is plastic! It’s the furthest from a natural fiber that you can get. It’s basically polyester. Polyester has its place in the fibre world, it adds durability to fabric for so many great applications.
However when it comes to bed sheets it’s a good thing to avoid.
So when you’re shopping for a new set of sheets for your bed and you want something cool for summer, don’t get microfiber! Look for natural fibres such as cotton, bamboo, rayon, viscose or linen or any blend of those things.
People think microfiber is great because it’s durable and it doesn’t wrinkle as easily.
I would rather sleep without getting sweaty than be worried about if the sheets on my bed are wrinkly 🤣
That’s all

We have 3 classes left for community school. Our next class will be all about learning how to assemble a digital pattern, determining our size by doing proper measurements, and cutting out the fabric to sew a wearable item!

Supplies that will be very helpful in this class include:
Fabric scissors
Scissors for cutting paper
A roll of clear tape (same as we use to wrap presents)
Pins

You do not need to bring your sewing machine!
If you purchased your own fabric please bring it!

If you have plans to purchase fabric this weekend the fabric requirements are 1.5 yards.
If you want to make your apron with a lining (reversible) you will need the fabric requirements times 2. So 1.5 yards of each fabric.
Another consideration is if you wanted to make your pocket a different color you can purchase a piece of fabric that is 14” long x 11” wide (a fat quarter would do the job)
Finally if your total hip measurement is more than 60” and you want to extend the size of this item you will need to have 2.25 yards of fabric. (Or double that for a lined apron)

Second Finally, I will be bringing along some fabric you can purchase for a very reasonable price. Plenty to choose from.

Have a lovely weekend everyone. We will see you on Monday for a different sewing class than we are used to

I snuck in a half hour of sewing tonight on my quilt coat.
The quilt I used was really old and worn out. It’s super soft and has plenty of vintage charm and plenty of holes.
I saved my scraps and cut out extra pieces from the Irish wedding ring pieces, then I found the exact right spot for all the scraps to cover all the holes. There are lots of angles and different sizes!
Now I am in the process of appliqué patching them all into place.
I like the little bit of interest it adds to this already very beautiful quilt.
It’s kind of nice to sit and do this slow work.

I cut the pattern pieces of this quilt coat out several months ago. It’s been neatly stacked on the end of my ironing board, patiently waiting for time and head space to work on it again. The spring weather and a break in community school permits some work time.
I want to bind the seams inside the coat. I saw binding at the Buy Rite in Montague and almost bought it, then decided to wait. I had a look through my big bag of notion spools and found this perfect pink double fold binding, 150 yards of it! I really dislike binding so this is going to be interesting.
I still have some patching to do on the cut out pieces as there were some holes in the quilt I used. It’s a slow project and I am excited about how it’s coming together.

We have only a few classes left of community school. Last nights class was easy, fun and yielded some great quilt blocks. It also served lessons and we all gained more quilting skills. Seam allowance consistency, slowing down to take time and be more exact, paying close attention to instructions. Quilting is not easy, but it’s fun!!

Next week is the windup party for community school. If you missed the details on that because you missed class I can pass those on via messenger or text. Just ask!

March 30 class is starting our apron. The apron is a 2 part class.
Apr 6 class is part 2 of the apron class.
If you are going to miss one of these classes but still want to make the apron I am happy to direct you on that. Please reach out.
April 13 is our final class. We haven’t decided what we are doing in that class yet. Open to ideas. Maybe just our own get together with treats and to sew something small but still fun!

See everyone in 2 weeks for sewing class 🙂
