What if we stopped making stuff?

A hypothetical thought experiment I find interesting - if we ignore the job loss aspect and focus on whether or not we’d be okay as a society using the flatscreens, cars, and toaster ovens that already exist.

Planned obsolescence and innovation purely for the sake of novelty (not function) are ever present in today’s marketplace, because that’s what’s necessary for companies to stay above water. What if, instead, repairability, reliability, and longevity were incentivized?

Does enjoying nice things make you vain, or materialistic?

IMO, not always. I spend a lot of time thinking about my relationship with “stuff” seeing that my job is so intertwined with material goods, and nice ones at that. I’m far from perfect, I’ve been guilty of coveting objects and placing too much emphasis on their importance. But I’ve also gained a lot from my interest in material goods.

I’ve gained a deeper appreciation and understanding of craftsmanship, I’ve shared a lot of great conversations and met amazing people with a similar admiration of carefully made objects.

For me, the line is this: if I am a) judging other people for their material possessions (or lack-thereof) or b) drawing time and attention away from the important things in my life (family/friends/experiences) to pursue the consumption of material goods — then yeah I’m probably a materialistic piece of s**t.

I like nice stuff, but if I had to give it all up I think I’d still be a very content individual, and I’m immensely grateful that I’m in the position I’m in.

Apologies for this not being as polished as my normal content, AND not the most nuanced take, as it’s under 60 seconds, however I thought this was an interesting topic to discuss.

We talk about the effects that “ens**ttification” have on us as consumers, but I haven’t heard a lot of people talking about how it impacts the folks involved in making the goods that are being “ens**ttified”.

Food for thought.

Plywood - an excellent example of how thoughtful design can turn the humblest of materials into coveted objects, especially when utilizing the unique properties of said materials. (I love plywood).
