Look closely. That toe embroidery is hand stitched, not glued on. It takes real technique, real time, and real expertise, and it's what gives an espadrille its strength and room to breathe. Many so called espadrilles fake it with a printed canvas patch. Ours never do. Authentic espadrilles are made in Spain or France, by hand, stitch by stitch.

This is me, Diego, hand-lacing a pair of espadrilles the traditional way, no machines involved. I've been doing this for years, and it's still one of my favorite parts of the process. In this video I'm adding classic Pamplona-style laces, a style rooted in the San Fermín running of the bulls heritage.

At the end you'll see a few of the ribbon colors available, so you can get a feel for the options.

We wanted to show you what really goes into every DIEGOS JOKARI paddle before it ever reaches your backyard.

It starts with reclaimed Quebec wood, sanded smooth, then carefully drilled for the ball attachment. Diego hand-carves the sides where the elastic wraps around, brushes on the varnish coat by coat, and stamps "Made in Canada" directly into the wood. Every paddle is numbered and comes with its own certificate of authenticity, because this is a limited edition of only 999, no more will ever be made.

JOKARI disappeared from store shelves decades ago. Thirty years later, our family brought it back the only way that made sense to us: built by hand, one paddle at a time, right here in Quebec.
This isn't mass production. It's a small workshop, a lot of patience, and a game we grew up loving.

🎾 THE FAMOUS 1930's FRENCH GAME IS FINALLY BACK 🎾

Remember Jokari? The classic paddle-and-ball game from the 1930s where a rubber ball, tethered to a weighted wooden base by a long elastic band, rebounds right back to you with every hit. No court, no wall, no opponent required (though it's definitely more fun with one) 😄

After 30 years away, we're bringing it back, handcrafted by Diego and family right here in Quebec, using repurposed wood given a second life. Each set is individually numbered and limited to only 999 pieces.

Here's a fun secret: the paddle and ball came together quickly, but the elastic? That took two full years to perfect. After endless rounds of testing, we finally landed on a 100% super stretchy Spanish latex, just 1mm thick, yet built to last!

This isn't just a game. It's a piece of history, made new again, and made to be played all summer long.

Taught an espadrille making workshop in Ottawa this summer!
In just 4 hours, everyone in the room went home with a handmade pair of red espadrilles, made to their own size, by their own hands.
Rope soles, canvas from Alicante, thread and needle... that's really all it takes. It's an old technique from Spain, passed down through generations of shoemakers, and it never gets old teaching it.

Watching people go from "never thought I'd make shoes" to holding up a finished pair with a huge grin, that's the best part of this job. Everyone brought such great energy today. 🙌
