But seriously…
As Week Two wraps up for me, I would like to formally nominate every teacher, EA, administrator and school support person I’ve worked alongside for some combination of:
A standing ovation.
A hot coffee.
A bathroom break.
A lunch they actually get to eat.
And approximately 37 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Because GOOD GRIEF, education is a big job.
These past two weeks I have laughed until my stomach hurt.
I’ve had little cries.
I’ve answered questions.
I’ve asked LOTS of questions.
I’ve watched teams brainstorm, pivot, regulate, regroup, try something new and celebrate progress that might look incredibly small to someone outside the room — but was absolutely MASSIVE to the people who know that student.
Parents and caregivers, this part is for you:
Your child’s education team needs to hear when they’re getting it right.
We naturally speak up when something goes sideways.
That’s important.
But speaking up when something goes beautifully matters too.
Did your child come home excited about something their teacher did?
Tell them.
Does your child have an EA who just GETS them?
Tell them.
Did an administrator make your family feel heard?
Tell them.
Did someone at school make your child feel safe, capable, included, funny, smart, brave or simply WELCOME?
PLEASE. TELL. THEM.
Because behind every strategy, visual, lesson plan, accommodation, regulation break and ridiculous little inside joke is a human being trying very hard to help a kid succeed.
Education teams:
In case nobody has told you lately…
WE SEE YOU.
We see the work.
We see the heart.
We see the exhaustion.
We see you showing up again tomorrow anyway.
You are extraordinary.
And the world is genuinely better because you decided to spend your days helping kids discover that they belong in it.
Now somebody please find that coffee you made at 8:07 this morning.
It’s probably beside the photocopier.
