Material Things has been closed all week so that my husband, Lyle Sharkey and I could re-upholster many of the worn out benches from the three Smitty's Restaurants that we own (one in Parksville and two in Nanaimo)

We even recruited my sister in law Terri to help us on Tuesday!! In all, we removed the old upholstery, made new covers and re-upholstered 30 benches and 7 chair tops!! Come on down to one of our Smitty's Restaurants for a great meal and see our hard work!!

Today I'd like to showcase another one of my fabulous brides from this year, Ashley Wilson. I've been looking forward to sharing pics of her incredible gown! Her gown was SO incredibly unique, and I absolutely loved it! 🥰 Her gown was held on her shoulders with the most beautiful straps made of pearls and fine cording that delicately draped across the open back of her gown. And, being bias cut, her dress draped over her body with such perfection! It was feminine, romantic and completely unforgettable. Every little detail made this gown special but seeing Ashley in it during her pick up appointment was what truly made it come alive! 😍

I get to meet the most incredible women, hear their stories, share in their excitement and watch them walk out of my shop feeling beautiful and ready to marry the person they love! It just doesn't get any better than that! 🧵

Thank-you Ashley for entrusting me with your incredible gown! You looked absolutely BREATHTAKING! It was a pleasure to sew for you! 🪡

✨ A Beautiful Transformation for the Beautiful Bride Sarah! ✨

When Sarah Post first brought her wedding gown into the shop it was multiple sizes too big on her—but she could see the potential hiding underneath all that extra fabric! 🧵 We knew this wasn’t going to be a simple alteration. This gown needed to be completely reworked and essentially remade to fit Sarah beautifully. 🤍

And what a transformation it was!

Piece by piece, we reshaped, reconstructed and recreated this gown until it became her gown - perfectly fitted to her, flattering her beautifully, and making her feel every bit as amazing as a bride should feel. ✨ We even created matching lace straps from the hem of her gown! They looked like they'd always been there!

But honestly, one of my favourite parts of this whole experience was getting to know Sarah and her family. They were an absolute blast to have in the shop! So much laughter, so much fun, and such wonderful energy every time they came through the door. 🤩

And then came the moment that makes all those hours of sewing, fitting and creating so worthwhile…

Seeing Sarah in her finished gown on her wedding day. Absolutely breathtaking. She loved her dress, she looked incredible, and I couldn't have been happier seeing this beautiful bride wearing a gown that had been transformed especially for her. 🪡

Thank you SO MUCH Sarah for sending me your stunning photos! You looked absolutely BREATHTAKING!! And...hello!! ... The way he LOOKS at you and the smile on your face says it all !! OMG! 😍

Sarah, it was such a joy to be part of your wedding journey. Thank you for trusting me with your gown and for bringing so much laughter and happiness into the shop along the way!

We see hundreds of brides every year, but some of the brides who come through our doors definitely leave a piece of themselves behind, and Marie Belanger was one of those brides! ❤️

It was such a pleasure getting to know her and work with her to create the "gown of her dreams!" She was an absolute joy and had such fabulous ideas of what she wanted her gown to look like! Marie, you were such a beautiful bride inside and out! ✨

And your wedding photos… WOW! 😍 They are absolutely stunning, Marie...you looked breathtaking!! Seeing you all dressed up and so incredibly happy makes all those little details and hours of work so very worthwhile. 🧵🪡

There’s something so special about being part of a bride’s journey to her wedding day. 💕✨

I absolutely love what I do—helping fabulous ladies feel comfortable, confident, and completely beautiful in their wedding gowns. Every gown has its own little story, and every bride has her own vision. Being trusted to make those finishing touches and see everything come together is such a joy!

From the first fitting to that final look in the mirror, I feel so lucky to meet so many wonderful women and play a small part in such a BIG day. 👰‍♀️💍Allie Staniforth was one of my "standout" brides this summer! She already looked beautiful in her wedding gown, but it needed a few tweaks to make it SPECTACULAR! She also brought in her short sequin long sleeve backless reception dress in to be fitted.. That was fun to work on and looked crazy awesome on her as well !

While the crush of wedding season isn't over yet, I'd like to thank the hundreds of beautiful brides who have trusted Material Things with their wedding gown alterations this year! It truly is a pleasure to work with you!❤️

Last week on beautiful Vancouver Island, Chelsey said “I do” in an intimate ceremony surrounded by love, laughter, and the people who matter most. Every detail reflected her—elegant, effortless, and deeply meaningful.
