I have a really difficult time setting prices for my creations. It's difficult because I know very well that someone can purchase a dollar store ornament for well, a dollar so why would anyone spend $10, $20, $30 on something I made that might look similar.
Most of my little creations take anywhere from 30 minutes to many hours to create. They are small which makes some people believe, small = less time. Not so much. Have you seen the very teeny tiny details that go into some of my creations? A sesame seed on a bun on a miniature hamburger bun is the size of a louse. Give or take a millimetre. ๐ Rolling that teeny piece of clay into the perfect shaped sesame seed is not easy. My eyes are really getting a workout!
When you buy from a maker, like me, yes you are paying for the supplies I have to buy but what I don't charge much for is my time. My time away from hanging out with my kids, my time doing my own Christmas shopping, my time being present for the needs of my family which are ever growing. I do my side business in between my other part-time jobs as a freelance writer, on-air promotions producer, proofreader.... I don't really stop actually.
So why do I do all of this? Well the little bit of extra income is nice. I have a daughter who is a competitive cheerleader and is going to be competing at both Nationals and Canadian Finals this year in Niagara Falls. That ain't cheap! Every little bit helps support my family.
The biggest thing is I love being creative. When I was a kid, I could spend hours colouring, drawing, reading, recording radio shows on our fisher price tape player, putting on plays (you know, when kids didn't have ipods).... It's in my nature to create. As an adult, I still love to create: music, documentaries, stories, plays, paintings, clay creations... that's in me no matter how hard I try to deny it and it's also what makes my soul soar. My grandparents were talented painters and woodcarvers... I'd be so lucky if I channelled any of that talent.
So thank you for supporting my business instead of some factory in China. Yeah you could buy something at the dollar store but I guarantee there was no love put into it, they probably don't care what your daughter's favourite colour is and they definitely don't know the story behind the item you purchased. When you order something from me, whether it's a replica of your late husband's favourite toy or a memory of your favourite deceased pet, I keep those stories with me forever. I'm not just a crafter, I'm a keeper of your most important life stories.
Keep supporting local ๐
