Filmmaking wasn’t a straight path for Tamara.
It was a leap.

After leaving a stable 9–5 to pursue film in her late twenties, she started again from the bottom of the industry ladder. Long hours, uncertain freelance work, and learning how to trust the process.

Her reminder is simple: play the long game.

Behind every finished project are years of small steps, quiet persistence, and the courage to keep showing up when no one is watching.

Plain Café won’t be moving forward in the planned space.

Sometimes the timing, structure, or environment isn’t right, even when the idea is. Rather than force it, we’re choosing to pause this chapter and protect what Plain stands for.

The brand, the philosophy, and the people remain.
This just won’t be the format.

Thank you to everyone who supported the idea. More to come.

We’re proud to announce our partnership with Chronicle Coffee Roasters ☕️

From day one, Jiri and Jake have been incredibly supportive and generous with their time and belief. They didn’t just treat Plain Café as a concept, they treated it like something worth backing and building, even in its earliest stages. That kind of confidence means more than we can easily put into words.

Chronicle started in Calgary with a clear intention: focus on the craft, respect the process, and build real relationships around coffee. Over time, that commitment led them to grow thoughtfully, including bringing their roasting and presence to Vancouver, without losing what made them special in the first place.

We’re grateful to be working with people who care deeply about doing things properly and who genuinely want to see others succeed. Excited to serve Chronicle at Plain Café and to grow together from here.

Plain Café is opening its shelves to builders.

We are looking for a small number of independent brands to be stocked inside Plain Café.

Plain Café was built for people at the start of their journey.

If you are building something real, you already know:
• Signing a retail lease makes no sense early on
• Pop-ups are expensive, time consuming, and inconsistent
• Online only means low visibility and no physical touchpoint

Plain Café exists in the gap between all of that.

We offer:
• A steady flow of aligned foot traffic
• Everyday visibility without the cost of a storefront
• A café environment where guests want to support builders
• Display options in varying sizes depending on your product

This is not a market table.
This is not a short pop-up.
This is a home base while you build.

Limited vendor spots available.

For vendors confirmed before January 15
• 30 days of free rent

After that
• Minimum 3-month commitment

If you are interested, email [email protected] with:
• Your name
• Your business name
• What you offer
• A short intro on why your product fits Plain

We are intentionally selective.
Everything in the space must align with the Plain ethos.

Plain Café is hiring.

We are not looking for staff.
We are looking for builders.

Plain Café is for people who think clearly under pressure, take ownership without being asked, and make good decisions when no one is watching.

If you need step by step instructions, this is not the place.
If you wait to be told what to do, this is not the place.

If you believe great hospitality comes from making good judgment, care, and personal standards, keep reading.

Who this is for
• You have high agency. You see problems and fix them
• You think from first principles, not scripts
• You care deeply about the guest experience
• You take pride in doing things properly, even when it is quiet
• You want responsibility, not micromanagement
• You treat the café like it is yours

Who this is not for
• People who need constant supervision
• People chasing tips without caring about craft
• People who only do what is written in the handbook

The role
Front of house and bar support at Plain Café - Coffee, service, pacing, judgment, and presence matter most.

We can teach technical skills.
We cannot teach ownership.

How to apply
Send your resume to [email protected] and answer the following questions in your email.
1. Your name
2. Which value you live by that you rarely see reflected at work, and why it matters to you
3. Something you are quietly building or working toward that you are proud of, but hesitant to talk about publicly

We are building something quiet, intentional, and long term.
If that speaks to you, we want to hear from you.

We’re excited to welcome The Original Cookie Bar into the Plain circle.

Behind TOCB is Maya. A builder in every sense. Quietly growing her cookie brand while working full time and raising two kids on her own. No noise. Just consistency, care, and an obsession with getting it right.

The result? Some of the most memorable cookie flavours Vancouver has to offer. Thoughtful, indulgent, and made to be returned to.

You’ll be seeing (and tasting) more of TOCB at Plain soon.
Trust us. One won’t be enough. Made with ❤️ from 🇯🇵 to 🇨🇦 🍪

In Plain Sight Volume 21 - Clayton Cross of

I met Clayton while filming his first podcast, a conversation bringing together some of Vancouver’s top physiotherapists in an unexpected setting. What stood out immediately wasn’t just the ambition, but the intent: create space, share knowledge, and elevate the people around him.

Through Coast Performance Rehabilitation, Clayton has built more than a clinic. He’s built a team, a culture, and a place where progress is measured by how others grow and not just personal wins.

Quiet work. Long reps. Real impact.

“Luck” is one of the most convenient excuses.

James Clear makes a powerful point:
opportunities don’t float around waiting to land on you.
They’re held by people.
By relationships.
By rooms you have to earn your way into.

When someone says they’re unlucky, what they often mean is
they haven’t shown up long enough
or consistently enough
or close enough.

Luck is the byproduct of systems.
Systems of practice.
Systems of connection.
Systems of putting yourself where opportunity can actually find you.

You don’t get lucky sitting still.
You get lucky by moving.
